Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

Not meaning to dig up an old thread, but I had an odd thought on the global warming...

Carbon Dioxide levels are normally what people attribute the rise of global mean temperatures to and are most worried about stopping, etc. They usually mention it being 'pumped into the atmosphere' which implies it sits like a bubble around the Earth, making everything underneath it hotter. You've all seen the pictures of the factory belching smoke into the air, I'm sure?

Carbon Dioxide is like... twice as heavy as nitrogen and oxygen, isn't it? And at least a little heavier than most other "atmospherically abundant" gasses, right? So isn't it really settling down nearer the surface of the Earth acting more like a blanket? If so, then aren't some elevations are suffering more than others; The Dead Sea would probably notice before Everest Base Camp would, wouldn't it?

Being completely honest, I don't read much on Global Warming anymore because I tend to find most articles arguing whether it's happening or not rather than explain what's actually happening. Pictures are welcome, but not required smile. A diorama would be nice; I haven't seen one of those in ages!

Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

Well I just so happened to run into someone who explained to me the theory behind greenhouse gases and how they react, just in case anyone's interested. He wasn't sure about the supposed range in the atmosphere that the 'man-made' greenhouse gases were pooling at, but here's the general idea:

Most visible light comes streaming through the atmosphere and makes contact with the Earth. The Earth absorbs some of the energy and reflects the rest as infrared light.
Greenhouse gases are very good at aborbing infrared light and will do so for a portion of what is reflected off the Earth. When they absorb enough energy, they become active and then begin emitting the energy again. It radiates in all directions, so about half is radiated back up into space, and approximately the other half is radiated back at the Earth.

Still looking for a diagram of the altitudes that the different greenhouse gasses collect at, if anyone happens to know?

Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

Also, the way the Earth reflects heat is as follows: ice will reflect approx. 95% of the infrared radiation that hits it. Water, on the other hand reflects about 60%. So, as the ice melts, there is more water, which absorbs more heat, around the remaining ice, causing it to melt faster, and so on. The process, like almost every other process in the universe*, moves at an exponential rate.

Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

Hey guys! I was going to make a new thread about this but I remembered we had a global warming thread. So here's what I had to say.

Despite what appears to be growing concern for global warming, and carbon dioxide levels in the media and politics, all I ever see in my urban Philadelphia neighborhood is more and more trees being cut down because they are an annoyance. Back when I first moved to this neighborhood, about 15 years back, large oak and maple trees lined the avenues, and where plentiful in neighborhood streets, and backyards. By now, trees have all but completely disappeared. I once asked a neighbor why he was cuttting his tree down in his yard. He said "Because they're a mess. Thats all trees are, is a mess!"

aren't trees a little more than that? Aren't they a crucial component of our environment necessary for our own existence?

I understand that trees do make messes, and they can cause damage to plumbing systems, sewer pipes, and whatnot. But seriously, how much could global warming be reduced if we  spent time planting trees in places where they are scarce (such as urban neighborhoods and cities) instead of cutting them down?

Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

The amount of trees cut down because of urbanization is probably significant, but not by any great amount.  To make an analogy, it's like holding a bucket under a waterfall, putting a few holes in the side/bottom, and expecting the water to drain.

Sulphur hexafluoride is not toxic. Just because a molecule is constructed from toxic atoms, it does not mean that the end result is toxic. Take table salt (sodium chloride) sodium would bore a hole through your skin on contact with your skin's moisture as it combined to sodium hydroxide (a strong base) and massive amounts of heat, while chlorine would combine with the moisture to create hydrochloric acid (a strong acid).

Aye, they are crucial, (maybe in a pinch the other photosynthesizing organisms on the planet could take up the burden of the trees...). I remember reading once (when I was much younger) that a full grown tree (I can't remember the type of tree) could produce enough oxygen to keep 70 people alive. I wonder how many kilograms of carbon dioxide the tree would absorb in a year...

As for this global warming topic, I do not necessarily believe in merely global warming, I believe in recent rapid/chaotic global-climate changes.

Some places are getting much warmer than their average and others are getting much cooler than their average. Even the weather here in Lethbridge is all screwed up. Our winters used to be snow for a few days, and the snow would last for weeks. Now it snows a whole lot for a day or two, then a chinook (warm wind) comes in and melts the snow within a week. It snows a whole lot once again and after a few more days it melts.

I know something bad is happening, and it is not necessarily a warming in all places; it is an imbalance of climates on the whole of the Earth.

Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

Al Gore's movie is called An Inconvienent Truth...

Also global warming is happening slowly with an average temperature increase of less than 1 degrees F. We will most likely not see an ice age and our future kids will probably not either. As for Iron dust, I think that would kill some species of fish throwing the food chain out of whack, plus humans have harmed the oceans enough aleady. As for turning off computers and electronics, you may still have 'ghost' electricity running through the wires. The only way is to disconnect the electronics, which is a huge hassle. Just continue living your life and recylce when able. Life has survived future ice ages and I think humans can as a whole make it through this one with all of the technology and new knowledge we have available to us.

We watched that movie in Biology (and part of it in our 1st year orientation last year [again, my 1st year corresponds to western 7th grade])

I've read about it in wikipedia and they say that Al Gore was a bit over-estimating the figures.

Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

yes it was a great movie to open peoples minds to what's going on in the world. People who are interested in this subject should check out Project Earth on the discovery channel. It is focused on ideas to help solve this issue, one of the proposals is launching a bunch of mirrors into space to reflect the suns heat away from the earth.

They are the same thing.  That is the major threat of global warming.  Most of our weather patterns rely on systems to provide the weather we expect.  One example of this is the trade winds in the Atlantic.  You change the global temperature by any amount, thus changing these systems, and you end up with chaotic results.  If it weren't for the trade winds, Europe would be a lot colder.

Re: Global Warming- It's Happening!

*bump*

I was in a competition with 5 others on my team this year to create the best solution to climate change. One main problem is that pine/bark beetles are destroying the trees in our forests (especially a pain in Northern US and British Columbia). Live forests are carbon dioxide sinks, while dead forests are carbon dioxide emitters. As you can see, pine beetles are a major contributor to climate change. Our team decided to make a rocket able to be backpacked by the average hiker to carry beetle-resistant tree seeds or beetle predator eggs and disperse them widely. Our team won 1st place presentation in Colorado, and we were invited to submit our project to a panel of judges that will decide 6 teams to go to Denmark and try to implement their solution. We are currently working on these three main issues with a rocket:
-Putting in a delayed charge to make the seeds shoot to the outside of the rocket, instead of going into the rocket (easy enough to implement, just haven't yet)
-A smaller flame or a higher launching platform so that there is no fire hazard (We are thinking of using compressed air to launch the rocket up a ways before the engine kicks in.)
-Less noise so that the rocket doesn't scare away wildlife (The fix to this one is the same as the fire hazard one.)

Our research presentation in full is here:

Global warming is soooo terrible in the south of Australia We are having like 45 degree heat and flooding & cyclones in Queensland. It's just so crazy. I was watching the weather the other day and the dude goes "If you think the weather is bad now wait till the future" and then we're all lyk oh great rolleyes
