Re: CAS suggestions
How? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #52 20130405 02:28:52
Re: CAS suggestionsI agree but we were talking about the fact that they have mastered a difficult mathematical discipline. One that few mathematicians are capable of. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #53 20130405 02:36:54
Re: CAS suggestionsMaybe my opinions should be better when I really start using them 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #54 20130405 02:47:17
Re: CAS suggestionsIt is like arguing against using a ballpoint pen just because Euler did not have one. Or not using electricity because Gauss did not need it. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #55 20130405 02:48:45
Re: CAS suggestionsNope, I am not arguing against CAS 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #56 20130405 02:52:33
Re: CAS suggestionsThe school system is the one arguing against them. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #57 20130405 02:58:08
Re: CAS suggestionsYeah! 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #58 20130405 03:02:56
Re: CAS suggestionsHmmm, maybe but maybe it will help you focus by removing the drudgery of calculation from your work. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #59 20130405 03:11:27
Re: CAS suggestionsYes, but at school they won't allow me to carry a calculator 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #60 20130405 03:18:18
Re: CAS suggestionsThey have been arguing about that for 50 years over here. I guess you know what side I have been arguing. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #61 20130405 03:33:10
Re: CAS suggestionsYes, but I do not know what I should argue for 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #62 20130405 03:45:27
Re: CAS suggestionsThat is okay, you have plenty of time to learn those things. You are on the right forum that is for sure. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #63 20130406 02:33:25
Re: CAS suggestionsDo I have to know integration before I can use a CAS? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #64 20130406 02:36:48
Re: CAS suggestionsYou have not learned it yet. Install the CAS and it automatically becomes your new teacher. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #65 20130406 03:54:02
Re: CAS suggestionsDoes it mean it will teach me Calculus? Even if I don't know? 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #66 20130406 04:00:41
Re: CAS suggestionsNot exactly but it will check your answers. You can do as many problems as you want and it will tell you when you are right. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it. All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof. #67 20130408 22:37:19
Re: CAS suggestionsAgnishom, Calculus (the fundamentals anyways) is not too arduous with the correct resources. There are numerous online resources which make learning Calc easy at any age (by the way, the MIF calculus tutorials are great). Anyways, as far as I know, wxMaxima can be used for many other things not involving calculus. I have discovered a truly marvellous signature, which this margin is too narrow to contain. Fermat Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. Archimedes Young man, in mathematics you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: CAS suggestionsAgreed 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' Re: CAS suggestionsHave you done much on limits and differentiation yet? I have discovered a truly marvellous signature, which this margin is too narrow to contain. Re: CAS suggestionsI just know the fundamental idea and a little formula 'And fun? If maths is fun, then getting a tooth extraction is fun. A viral infection is fun. Rabies shots are fun.' 'God exists because Mathematics is consistent, and the devil exists because we cannot prove it' 'Who are you to judge everything?' Alokananda #71 20130409 00:59:39
Re: CAS suggestionsSo are you familiar with the idea of a limit? Anyways, there is this great book "Calculus Made Easy". It is small and is 60 years old (but was recently renovated by Martin several years back). It is great and teaches even the chain rule with ease. Re: CAS suggestionsThat is a very good book and it taught me. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it.
