Re: CAS suggestions

I agree but we were talking about the fact that they have mastered a difficult mathematical discipline. One that few mathematicians are capable of.

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

Re: CAS suggestions

Maybe my opinions should be better when I really start using them

Re: CAS suggestions

It is like arguing against using a ballpoint pen just because Euler did not have one. Or not using electricity because Gauss did not need it.

Re: CAS suggestions

Nope, I am not arguing against CAS

The school system is the one arguing against them.

Re: CAS suggestions

Yeah!

Maybe a 14 year old is not supposed to get into that so soon, I already have the tendency of making sily mistakes and relying on calculators will defocus me more

Re: CAS suggestions

Hmmm, maybe but maybe it will help you focus by removing the drudgery of calculation from your work.

Re: CAS suggestions

Yes, but at school they won't allow me to carry a calculator

They have been arguing about that for 50 years over here. I guess you know what side I have been arguing.

Re: CAS suggestions

That is okay, you have plenty of time to learn those things. You are on the right forum that is for sure.

Re: CAS suggestions

Do I have to know integration before I can use a CAS?

Re: CAS suggestions

You have not learned it yet. Install the CAS and it automatically becomes your new teacher.

Re: CAS suggestions

Does it mean it will teach me Calculus? Even if I don't know?

Re: CAS suggestions

Not exactly but it will check your answers. You can do as many problems as you want and it will tell you when you are right.

Re: CAS suggestions

Agnishom, Calculus (the fundamentals anyways) is not too arduous with the correct resources. There are numerous online resources which make learning Calc easy at any age (by the way, the MIF calculus tutorials are great). Anyways, as far as I know, wxMaxima can be used for many other things not involving calculus.

Re: CAS suggestions

So are you familiar with the idea of a limit? Anyways, there is this great book "Calculus Made Easy". It is small and is 60 years old (but was recently renovated by Martin several years back). It is great and teaches even the chain rule with ease.

The original book is 103 years old though... Yet I believe it is the more comprehendable introductory calculuss book I have ever had the pleasure to read.
