Re: Simplify the following:

So, by combining them. x^2 - x + x - 1 = x^2-1. is this right Sir?

Re: Simplify the following:

The order of operations goes

"Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" or PEMDAS

It says parentheses first then exponentiation so

-x^0 says do the exponentiation ( raising to a power) first and then the minus sign. so it is -1.

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it.
All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof.

Please I am not grasping what you mean.

Re: Simplify the following:

You raise a number to a power before you do anything other than a parentheses. This is called the order of operations. The ^0 goes first then the - sign.

Re: Simplify the following:

Errr okay. So something like. (x^2 - x + x - x^0)

Re: Simplify the following:

Yes, that is correct but you simplify it to

x^2 -1

Re: Simplify the following:

Hi;

You do the denominator the same way.

Try using FOIL.

Re: Simplify the following:

With the denominator I had: x^3 - 2x^2 + x.

Re: Simplify the following:

That is correct. When you combine the numerator and the denominator you get:

but you are not done because you can simplify further.

Re: Simplify the following:

I must factorise the denominator, and here I go:

x^3 - 2x + x = 0

= x^3 - x^2 - x^2 + x = 0
= x^2(x - 1) - x(x - 1) = 0

Therefore:

(x^2 - x)(x- 1)

Numerator looks like difference of two square. There I go:

(x - 1)(x+ 1)/(x^2 - x)(x- 1) = x + 1/x^2 - x) = x + 1/ x(x - 1) . I hope I am correct.

Re: Simplify the following:

That is correct! Very good.

I know they are not stressing anymore but they are wrong. Please bracket it like this:

(x + 1)/ (x(x - 1))

Please help me solve the following, I can solve,  but the 6 has become my headache, I can't figure out how to go about the 6.

.

b)

Please, the
has square root on it.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Simplify the following:

No, the top terms are all on one platform. It was accident that I brought a space between the twenty seven and the rest.
Besides, it is 6.3^3n+3. I missed the sign for negative. I am sorry.
