How costly is mathematica?

If I can't afford it, will I be able to do it with sage or some freeware?

Hi;

Mathematica is very costly for non - students, about 1500 dollars. It is cheap for students and faculty about 129 dollars.

Sage is a powerful alternative and so is Maxima which comes with geogebra. That is what anonimnystefy used.

Ooo

1. Is it free?

2. If 1 what is its download size?

Thanks for this, but why is the thread locked

I do not know about Sage very well. gAr uses it and is something of an expert with it. It needs Linux to run well.

Maxima can be downloaded as part of geogebra, 100+ megabyte download and as a standalone. It is 33 MB and can be downloaded from here.

I must say that I like the standalone version much better.

It has more features too.

That is why I like it more.

It is very convenient to have it residing right next to geogebra. When they finally get them working together it will be awesome.

Hey, does plotting in GG version of Maxima work?

What is the name of the command?

I think it's something like wx_plot2d().

The name itself (actually, the wx part) suggests to me that it is meant for wxMaxima only.

I do not think plot is working in that geogebra. They want you to use geogebra for all your plotting needs,.

Yes, but it would be interesting if you could enter a plotting command and get it plotted in GeoGebra!

The two do not yet play well together.

So, for now, there is no point in using the built-in Maxima and not the standalone?

I think the standalone is probably a better idea at this point.

Great.

And, either way, I currently have both, so either is an option.

You have to use the one that fits you best.

I know. That is what I am doing. But, I would love to see a better cooperation of the two software. When do you think they will start putting a little more effort into it?

They are currently making it a good 3D package also. Since William Schelter died their hasn't been that much improvements in Maxima.

It would be great to have it better at 3D.

Who is the William guy?

I am very thankful to him.

I think I will ask you a question about the cos(x)+x^2 problem some time in the next few days, if I don't forget.
