Re: Roman numerals

Hi;

They did not use Roman numerals when describing a fraction. They had a completely different notation for them.

Please look near the bottom.

Re: Roman numerals

Hi;

M is the highest, it stands for 1000.

Re: Roman numerals

Hi bobbym;
Isn't there a systemof drawing a bar over a roman numeral to multiply it with Thousand?

Re: Roman numerals

Hi Agnishom;

Yes, but that was added in the middle ages. The original Roman numerals did not have it.

But since they are stilled called Roman numerals you have a point. What do you think the largest integer was then?

Re: Roman numerals

Hi;

Integers are infinite ...... They were, will be and ... are

Today they are but the ancient Romans might not have been aware of that. Their number system was clumsy, or at least what we know of it. I think the OP wants a single letter and M is the greatest of that. If we put an overbar on top we can now have a million.

Re: Roman numerals

"OP" <===What does it mean?

Why weren't they aware of infinite integers?

Re: Roman numerals

OP means the original poster.

The Romans stole most of the Greeks culture and knowledge and brought it to Rome. Although they had it in their possession it seems they did not ever read it or try to build on it. They were exceedingly materialistic and had little inclination for abstract thought.

Re: Roman numerals

Talking about Romans, it reminds me of Asterix
Have you ever read any of it?

That would be

=3999*1000=3999000.

Hmmm... Wikipedia tells that it is less popular in Japan and the United States

Why don't you give it a try?

Re: Roman numerals

Hi Agnishom;

The major reason is I do not have the time anymore for novels. I am always inside of some journal article.

Re: Roman numerals

Er.... it is actually a comics.
Are you an editor of journals? Or a reviewer, perhaps?

Heavens no! I am just a guy who reads them and submits in them.

No one would ever think of putting me in a position of authority or responsibility. Not knocking MIF but there were better candidates than I even for moderator and administrator.
