Hi;

For the first the answer is 4.37

For the second the answer is 1.94

What do you get as the answer for these two for 5 dice throws.

Wouldn't you expect to get a greater answer for the second one than for the first one?

No, the second one is pairwise the first is the whole list minus the second list. I expect the first one to be larger.

### Re: So this is what was happening

But if you look at both pairwise, the first one can both increase and decrease, but the second one can only increase, so I would expect the second one to be greater.

The pairwise one can never be greater than 5. The other? Who knows!

That is why I did not want to discuss two sums. That sum does not exist so why are we talking about it?

The pairwise sum. That one comes from the problem. It is an average value. It is <=5.

### Re: So this is what was happening

There is no reason for it to be <=5. Only the summands are <=5.

### Re: So this is what was happening

6 - 1 = 5. That is the biggest difference. If you add up a ton of numbers that are 5 or less their average will be 5 or less.

But we don't take the average of the differences!

Yes we do. The original problem was an average. gAr and I agreed on that. The series you came up with here is something else. It has nothing to do with either problem. Why discuss it all?

Hi bobbym

Anyway, my GF needs only slight modification to solve gAr's problem.
