Mathematica is very costly for non - students, about 1500 dollars. It is cheap for students and faculty about 129 dollars.
Sage is a powerful alternative and so is Maxima which comes with geogebra. That is what anonimnystefy used.

I do not know about Sage very well. gAr uses it and is something of an expert with it. It needs Linux to run well.
Maxima can be downloaded as part of geogebra, 100+ megabyte download and as a standalone. It is 33 MB and can be downloaded from here.
