The Mathematician, the Physicist, and the Engineer

A mathematician, a physicist and an engineer went again to the races and laid their money down. Commiserating in the bar after the race, the engineer says, "I don't understand why I lost all my money. I measured all the horses and calculated their strength and mechanical advantage and figured out how fast they could run..."

The physicist interrupted him: "...but you didn't take individual variations into account. I did a statistical analysis of their previous performances and bet on the horses with the highest probability of winning..."

"...so if you're so hot why are you broke?" asked the engineer. But before the argument can grow, the mathematician takes out his pipe and they get a glimpse of his well-fattened wallet. Obviously here was a man who knows something about horses. They both demanded to know his secret.

"Well," he says, "first I assumed all the horses were identical and spherical..."

that was dumb! it wasn't even funny...how do you critique others' jokes if yours are even worse?

These guys just have no sense of humor, Devante. I thought it was pretty funny. Well, maybe not pretty funny, but not as bad as they made it out to be.

If you're going to insult or be negative towards me in every thread, then don't even bother.

Actually, no, I'm not interested in that...

But thanks for telling me what a 'Tobi' is.

Sorry, but that's not really funny, and I don't get it. Think about how funny a joke is before you post one - Could you tell me why this is funny, please?

We all love hypocrisy.

Boy let me tell you what:
I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

Re: The Mathematician, the Physicist, and the Engineer

To everyone:

People may say things that insult you.  Ignore them.  As the saying goes:

"Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter."

In my opinion, someone who insults others for telling a bad joke, even if the joke is in fact bad, is not worth a second thought.

But with all honesty, I liked the joke Devante.

"In the real world, this would be a problem.  But in mathematics, we can just define a place where this problem doesn't exist.  So we'll go ahead and do that now..."

Re: The Mathematician, the Physicist, and the Engineer

It's good to state your opinions about something (although not all the time). Insulting at the same time, however, is something completely different.

Re: The Mathematician, the Physicist, and the Engineer

I had an entertaining mechanics professor who could often refer to objects in a problem as spherical horses. For some reason it cracked me up. There's something special about a spherical horse drowning in glycerol while we do some fluid mechanics problems.
