Definitions - Your Help Needed

I am reaching the final stages of a large project to make a simple Illustrated Mathematics Dictionary.

There are about 450 words and 380 illustrations. All the definitions are my own, and most of the illustrations (some images are from Wikipedia).

I don't have any advanced definitions, but I don't see why I can't, so long as they are well explained.

Anyway, I need your help in proof reading and new definitions.

Proof Reading
=========

Simply read any definitions you like (the lot if you have time) and let me know any corrections.

New Definitions
==========

If you have any definitions you would like to contribute, just tell me them here.
Illustrations, or ideas for illustrations also welcome.

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

Would it be possible to change the dictionary or make another version of it so that all the definitions were on the same page? That'd make it far easier to proof-read and in some cases, easier to use as well.

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

Looking good, as always.

The letter menu should stay up the top even once a letter has been selected - this eases searches without always having to go back to the main page.

Also, maybe entries which are similar, have related words or opposites etc could be linked? For example, where it says, 'See [synonymous word]'. Or is this too messy?

Some of the letters seem a bit empty. Only one entry for 'I'? Indice, isosceles, infinity, integer, increase, index, irrational ... big_smile

One more thing!

The Dictionary subtitle wrote:

or use the Search function at left.

I tried typing 'converging lines' and searching and it said it didn't match any documents. Am I using the correct search function?

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

Wow, good feedback so far!

Mathsy: that could be useful for rough proofing, but just the words is not enough - it is best to see them in context with the illustration. It would also be very long.

jl: i shall look at having a letter menu on each page. I need to "beautify" it. I would love to have all the letters sitting inside some beautiful frame, maybe with fractal images and such.

Yes, I hope to link up similar words with something like "(Also See xyz)"

They are not part of the search yet, coz I don't trust the definitions for general use.

Obviously something funny with "I" !

I intend to work on this for the next week or two, then officially "publish" it with a link from the main index page.

But the highest priority is accuracy - don't want to give a wrong definition!!

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

Just a little thing you might want to add, that natural numbers, integers, rational numbers..., are noted with a blackboard N, Z, Q... Besides that, it's looking pretty good smile

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

But the N, Q, Z, etc. aren't just normal capital letters. They've got double lines in places to make them look extra important.

No, sets. Like a set of even numbers would be { 2, 4, 6 8, 10}. Or a set of clothes would be { Jeans, socks, jogging bottoms, shoes, jumpers, t-shirts } etc. You will study this in a few years. I don't remember which I did first, though - Group theory or set theory.

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

I meant sets smile A set is a collection of elements, like devanté showed before. Sets are conventionally denoted with capital letters. You could for example consider the set A={1,2,3,4} or Y={} (empty set, also denoted Ø). Some sets are used often however, for example the set of integers, and because of that you use a font called blackboard bold. ℤ represents the integers (the z comes from the german word Zahlen which means numbers).

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

Because sets are in everyday life. Why, you are a set yourself. And so am I. And everyone else on the forum, and in the whole world. In fact, existence itself is probably the biggest set imaginable...I think.

Re: Definitions - Your Help Needed

"Those letters" are used to denote the different 'kind' of numbers we have. Natural numbers, Integers, Rational numbers, and so on.. The importance of being able to use these sets should be obvious.
