A new section?

It seems that there are several of us here who would like, from to time, to discuss stuff which is outside the range of interests of those who come looking for elementary help in math. Any chance of a new section with a sufficiently enticing title (and a reassuring sub-title.... to the effect that it ain't as scarey as it sounds)?

Masters of Math? The Tower of Reason? Eulers World?

Re: A new section?

Haha, Euler's World is a cute name. Anything Euler (Euler's Lair? Euler's Dungeon? Those are pretty scary) would be great, but that's coming from his biggest fan...

This seems like a good idea though. It would be nice to have a place to go here where I can look forward to discussing higher-level mathematics. Maybe having such a section would help to attract more members who are pretty focused on math, like math majors in college or kids like me who enjoy nothing more than sitting at home reading a math textbook, dreaming of the day they can take a "real" math course. Anyway, I hope this section becomes reality someday.

Re: A new section?

Euler's Attic! First it is alliterative (as long as you pronounce "Euler" correctly).  Second it conveys a sense of something higher. Lastly, it suggests it contains stuff that Euler used, or may have used, at some time.

Euler's Attic Attack smile

But not quite alliterative ... "Oiler/Attic".

Pythagoras' Picnic / Euler's Attic
those are my favorites 'till now smile . Not that I'll be writing in the forum any time soon, but I'll have to look at the name in the forum listing wink

Re: A new section?

I have put a lot of thought into this, and have an interesting solution:

"Euler's Island"

This is a homage to "e" and "i".

So what about "pi" or "phi"? Aha! The inhabitants of the island can be either Pirates or Philosophers smile

Re: A new section?

I think the Pi-rates would win unless the Phi-losophers could somehow convince them that they don't exist.

I like "Euler's Attic" the best so far.

lol tongue

one that i really like, and i think would actually fit very well to this, is what is written on the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, that is - "Don't Panic"

"Don't Panic"

As far as I've heard, there is a creature living on this island that every maths interrested person should be afraid of. I'm ofcourse talking about the pi eater!

Re: A new section?

They are usually fat and slow from their diet, Patrick, so there isn't much to worry about.

Re: A new section?

So we all have our own ideas, but no consensus. So keep suggesting ...

Mathematicians:
Euler's Balcony
Euclid's Eatery
Taylor's World Series
Markov's Chain of Events
Home, home with Lagrange
Its a Gauss, Gauss, Gauss
The Abelian Group

Other:
The Imaginary Complex
Perfectly Prime
Aleph One

The Abelian Group

Brilliant! Although it has connotations of exclusivity, the banner could say someting like "....always welcomes new members".

That gets my vote

Re: A new section?

or

would look pretty intimidating and exotic, provided you could get "א" to show in the forum directory.

Otherwise something like "The Imaginary Complex" or "The Abelian Group".

Re: A new section?

So that is 2 votes for Abelian Group and half a vote for Aleph One ... ?

It is really simple to create the new section, but without a good name it isn't worthwhile.

Maybe we could choose some words from the middle of a proof. Like from Ricky's signature: "Where This Problem Doesn't Exist"

Or from recent posts "Assume That We Can", or "Well Defined, Associative and Closed", "The Proof is Trivial"

Hunt around and come up with suggestions!

Re: A new section?

"The Transcendentals"? "The 3-Sphere"? We need to get more people to come voice their opinion on this thread, we aren't really getting anywhere.

If this is the theme, then my vote would be for, "Without loss of generality."

Re: A new section?

Good ones!

Based on Rickys new avatar, we could have "Euclid Avenue" ... or "Euler Avenue" even. The slogan could be "The street where the ______ meet". (Insert a name there.)

Re: A new section?

OK, "Euler Avenue", but I can change it.

I will create it now.
