A new section? It seems that there are several of us here who would like, from to time, to discuss stuff which is outside the range of interests of those who come looking for elementary help in math. Any chance of a new section with a sufficiently enticing title (and a reassuring sub-title.... to the effect that it ain't as scarey as it sounds)? #2 2006-07-25 07:40:28

Re: A new section?Haha, Euler's World is a cute name. Anything Euler (Euler's Lair? Euler's Dungeon? Those are pretty scary) would be great, but that's coming from his biggest fan... #4 2006-07-26 00:25:32#5 2006-07-26 01:35:23
Re: A new section?Euler's Attic! First it is alliterative (as long as you pronounce "Euler" correctly). Second it conveys a sense of something higher. Lastly, it suggests it contains stuff that Euler used, or may have used, at some time. #6 2006-07-26 07:37:26

Re: A new section?I think the Pi-rates would win unless the Phi-losophers could somehow convince them that they don't exist. "In the real world, this would be a problem. But in mathematics, we can just define a place where this problem doesn't exist. So we'll go ahead and do that now..." #13 2006-07-31 09:04:51

Re: A new section?
As far as I've heard, there is a creature living on this island that every maths interrested person should be afraid of. I'm ofcourse talking about the pi eater! #15 2006-08-01 02:51:30
Re: A new section? They are usually fat and slow from their diet, Patrick, so there isn't much to worry about. "In the real world, this would be a problem. But in mathematics, we can just define a place where this problem doesn't exist. So we'll go ahead and do that now..." #16 2006-08-08 23:05:26

Re: A new section?
Brilliant! Although it has connotations of exclusivity, the banner could say someting like "....always welcomes new members". #18 2006-08-09 08:01:29
Re: A new section?or would look pretty intimidating and exotic, provided you could get "א" to show in the forum directory. Otherwise something like "The Imaginary Complex" or "The Abelian Group". #19 2006-08-10 09:43:55

Re: A new section?"The Transcendentals"? "The 3-Sphere"? We need to get more people to come voice their opinion on this thread, we aren't really getting anywhere. #21 2006-08-10 10:41:33
Re: A new section?
If this is the theme, then my vote would be for, "Without loss of generality." "In the real world, this would be a problem. But in mathematics, we can just define a place where this problem doesn't exist. So we'll go ahead and do that now..." #22 2006-08-13 16:45:50
