What is EM?

I assume that it is an abbreviation for, <something> math.

Re: What is EM?

Hi;

If you check google you will find lots of things that EM could stand for. Here is my favorite.

Love reading these old posts. Man, can that guy blather away. Wonder how many keyboards he wears away in a year? His fingers must be worn down to the bone and have the consistency of ghoulash.

Ghoulash?

Re: What is EM?

Is that delicious? What does it mean for that to be consistent?

Re: What is EM?

I have never eaten it, although I like and eat stew.

What does it mean for that to be consistent?

I was saying that guys fingers must be soft as stew (goulash) from all that typing. I was being humorous hoping to poke a bit of fun at the ole pompous baffoon. After all, how can he harm me?

There is a difference between writing and long winded.

Re: What is EM?

I think it expresses your sentiments, but if someone is truly confused and wants to know what EM is, it does not help them.

Re: What is EM?

Hmm, both EVW and jimmyR said it was easily the best post ever written on this forum and were astounded that no one here seemed to understand it. I explained that, by saying modern people have no concept of the history of math or its origins and therefore could not grasp it. I reminded them of the lions paw post.

Why did you not chime in and explain EM to him then?

Re: What is EM?

The post may be great, but it turns out it is not appropriate for the targetted audience, i.e, the audience who would ask "What is EM?" in the first place. jimmyR and EVW are practitioners of EM and also your close friends, they can see what you tried to explain but not the others. I can briefly explain why no one else gets it, if you want me to.

I can try but I am afraid I do not know enough.

Re: What is EM?

I do not know what that means.

Here is what you're doing in your article:
a) Explaining why EM is useful
b) Quoting people about the history of Mathematics
c) Explaining how things could change if EM were used.

Some of the crucial points missing from your post are:
a) What exactly is EM? What does experimental really mean?
b) How experimental mathematics is different from what non-mathematicians believe what mathematics is.
c) Where regular mathematics fails and EM works.

Re: What is EM?

a) can hardly be explained, it is like saying what is music or art.

b) I think I covered.

c) That would require a lot of examples.
