question about an example I saw at math is fun

Hi, while I'm study Inequalities I see this example :-

he said before the example ("OK, this example may be complicated if you don't know Algebra, but I thought you might like to see it anyway:")

is that mean I have to study and read all Algebra Topics?

I read and study this :-

Introduction to Algebra
Balance when Adding and Subtracting (animation)
Introduction to Algebra - Multiplication
Order of Operations - BODMAS, or PEMDAS
Substitution

definitions Basic Algebra Definitions
...

do I have to continue study the rest of topics like :

. then to Algebra 2 and collage algebra!

because my teacher in the university told me to study Inequalities and Solving Inequalities just that!

so can I study it and without study the rest of algebra?

please tell me what I need to study before I study Inequalities

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

You may get some replies that are going to just say study this, this and that and that is all you need. I am going to disagree with that even before it is posted. Algebra and the rest of math are all intricately intertwined. Each one depends on the other. Study it all. Of course, the wise men of the past already have outlined a path for you to follow. That path is called school. By trial and error the order that each part should be studied has already been determined. To see what comes first and then next just pick up any textbook.

That is not to say that you can not jump around a bit. Each of us is different, so if you think you can understand inequalities then dive right in and skip some things. Remember though, that you will eventually need to go back and cover that which you skipped over someday.

so can I study it and without study the rest of algebra?

So, the quickest answer is this: can you understand inequalities with what you presently know? If yes, then go right ahead. If no, then go back and get the background material you need.

hi Hannibal lecter

I made a comment about learning maths in this post http://www.mathisfunforum.com/viewtopic … 63#p213363  which I think is relevant here.

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

thank you bobbym and bob bundy and I'll read it,

#bobbym

of course I can solve inequalities but that because I used to solve it but not understanding the meaning of it 30% because I don't have (a past knowledge in algebra)  so I decided what you told me that " I'll solve inequalities for now and after that I'll come back for more algebra after I have a time for that"
is that a good plan?

thank you very much

cause in these days in university the student need to understanding what is going on not just doing it without a knowledge about what he is doing cause I don't study math only, I study a topics in computers that have a relative in maths. like programming and some engineering topics

thank you very much for your help see you soon

I did not exactly recommend that but I have resorted to that on more than one occasion.

cause in these days in university the student need to understanding what is going on

I am not trying to be mean ( I do not have to try, I am mean. ) but I do not think they are teaching uni students comprehension. Most that I see in forums have no idea what the heck they are studying. There is another post where the person tells me that they are just teaching them to pass a test. Mind you, this very idea, is what sent my country from being number one in math to number 29. How those boobs who call themselves educators here fail to see the adverse effect they are having is beyond me, or maybe they do see?

My advice is simple, work harder than the next fellow. Even if it is just a bit more, that will make all the difference. Learn now, party later. Or even better, learn now, learn later, skip the partying.

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

thank you very much,

can we start in my first question? back to this Example above

when he told me : (Imagine that "x" is the number of people at your party.......)

I tried to read it more than one times but I didn't understand it.

when I imagined it I understand there is 14 in my party but how we can say (If x > 11 , then x+3 > 14) in that easy!!!!!!

I mean when I imagined it I just have the power to write ( x+3 > 11 ) hehehe cause I imagined there is 11 and just added 3 it became like this
I don't have the power to write the right mathematical formula which is (If x > 11 , then x+3 > 14) ,,

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp me in that please

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

Maybe, the simplest way to understand it is too think of it like this:

If x > 11 then x = 12 or 13 or 14 or ...

Now if we add 3 to each of these possibilities we see

when x = 12, x + 3 = 15 which is greater than 14.

when x = 13, x + 3 = 16 which is greater than 14.

when x = 14, x + 3 = 17 which is greater than 14.

etc.

If this is not what you want them tell me where you need some help.

thank you very much now I understand what you write,

I also like to know it in very more accurately and maybe I'll do that in the future

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

but as well as please see what I did

the question tell What is x+3, when we know that x is greater than 11??

my way to sol : x+3 >> 11 +3 = 14  then we get x > 14

another question in  my mind (for example ) ... What is x+4, when we know that x is greater than 16??

my sol : 16 + 4 = 20  then x > 20

is that right? please tell me

and can you give me a similar example let us use >= ( greater or equal) ?

thank you.

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

Looks okay to me except >> is not the correct symbol. If x is greater or equal to 10 what is x+10?

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

10 + 10 = 20 , x >= 10
is that right?

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

another question please .. do you see this picture below :

1481919220841.png

is that mean I can't write a solution for this inequality? or I can write sol : either x > 3 or x < 3 ?
I mean when y teacher ask me to write an answer what should I write? there is no answer or the answer is : either x > 3 or x < 3?

x ≠ 3?

Hi;

I mean when y teacher ask me to write an answer what should I write?

Were you asked to find a solution to this question?

no I didn't, I just say that as example, cause we have this topic in our syllabus and our lecturer didn't notice us about anything whatever..

Then, if someone asks for the solution to that, I would respond with MIF's answer.

Re: question about an example I saw at math is fun

Hi; see my answer to your other question in post #16.

anyway Mr.Bobbym I finish the inequalities and all the exercises
and It's all thanks to you

I must correct some of that. Calling me bobbym is sufficient, you do not need Mr or capitals. I am glad that you are making progress but you did all that by yourself and will do more. It is good that we have the forum to converse and ask questions, is it not? The creator of this place is MIF. He gets all the credit, as I said before, I just hang here.

You are not really done with inequalities. Nobody is ever really done with math, it is too big for the human brain. We will be learning its mysteries for the rest of our lives, and perhaps a bit beyond.
