Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

Quite yes. A suanpan can show a maximum number of 15 in a rod whereas a soroban can only show 9.

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

That is a nice feature but the basic operation still remains the same?

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

Almost, though suanpan is more complicated due to being able to represent 10 in one rod.

With all due respect to the ancients, I will stick with the computer for doing calculations.

I'll stick with the computer too... Specifically M.

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

Hi;

I'll stick with the computer too... Specifically M.

I am glad you think that way. If you learn programming through M you will be much better off than I was learning all those procedural languages first and then trying to move to M. Unfortunately my laments are not helping Monox D. I-Fly get an answer to his question.

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

Unfortunately I was asked to write a book about abacus, not programming language.

Take a look at this for the original question:

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

Thank you. Now I am looking about how to operate fractions on abacus for the last chapter.

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

You could leave out the decimals and compute them as whole numbers. For instance:

(1 / 5)(1 / 8) = (.2)(.125) = 2(125)/10000

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

I heard that it can operate fractions without leaving the decimals first, though.

Re: [ASK] Can Abacus be Used to Multiply Two Single Digits?

How can we input it to the abacus?

Hi;

You are right, I do not know what I was thinking.
