Re: Square roots

Sorry, I missed your post.

Just square both sides of the equation in the quote twice and do the necessary transposition

Okay, very good. Now check the url but I would still use a calculator.

Re: Square roots

That quartic formula is very complicated. Are you sure there is no tricks for this particular problem.

(Please do not site the teakettle principle)

There sure are tricks for it. There is a nice substitution.

Because you should see that what I am suggesting could not possibly work.

Re: Square roots

The standard idea is y = x^2, that ain't gonna get the job done here.  And quoting the CSBF principle makes the solution clear.

do you mean brute force is a principle ?

Re: Square roots

Not exactly. The principle is this, what good does it do wasting time trying to find a shortcut? Had he used the quartic formula he would have been done already.

Re: Square roots

Recreation is nice, sort of like watching Them. But man when you need the answer faster than the other guy you can not doodle around looking for mathematical beauty. Too bad no one got the chance to read CSBF.

Re: Square roots

I do not need the answer faster. In fact, I was not asked for the answer. I was asked for the method

Re: Square roots

That is a good one! They are always asking for the method, caring little for the answer. Well, you can take 3 months trying to find a 10 minute shortcut. Total time to solve the problem 3 months + 10 minutes. I will just use the formula, time to solve the problem 20 minutes. Now if you and I were working together at NASA and I handed in the answer in 20 minutes and you took 3  months and 10 minutes who do you think is going to get that big raise?

The point is that I want to join the Math Challenge master post in Brilliant, not NASA.

Arna, do you know what the thread is about?

Re: Square roots

That is what the article was talking about. Sometimes doing what is at hand is better than trying to find the perfect solution, especially when you need the answer right now.

But I *do not* need the answer right now. I already have that
