Functions

Hello everyone, its has been a while since i last visited. I have a small problem on functions at the moment, I looked over the internet but couldn't find the solution to this small problem. So here is the problem, in the picture below:

functionmapping.png

Is this a valid function? Where 'b' can go twice to the range? I looked at the answers from my question sheet and it said it is not a surjection :S

Kind Regards smile

Re: Functions

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
Always satisfy the Prime Directive of getting the right answer above all else.

Re: Functions

It is not a function.

A function is a relation that relates every element of the domain to exactly one element of the co-domain.

You are welcome.

Re: Functions

What does it being surjective have anything to do with it being a function? Anyway, to tell if it is a surjective function, we need it's codomain.

No, you mean range or image.

Re: Functions

Range is that subset of the codomain which consists of all those and only all those elements on which something has been mapped.

Re: Functions

As an added note, you are assuming that all functions are surjective. That is not the case.
