square root of irrational number

im so lost. I have been staring at this page for over an hour.

im stuck on step 3

i need to find the square root of 23749.98

#step 1 first we write it in pairs starting left from decimal point and to the right of decimal point easy
#step 2 then find a perfect square of 2 and book says only 1 is smaller so i place the 1 above and below radical (not sure if right word)

STEP #3  next i thought we had to see how many times 2 would go into the first two digits of the new radicand 1 37 ?? so 2 goes into 13 = 6 times why is this book saying 5 times arghh i dont get it >< plz aware me

Hi bronxsystem;

That method is so bad I would only use it if they put a gun to my head. Luckily, it is one of the bad things in my life that I no longer remember. I can not teach it to you and you should wait until someone else comes in who can do it.

phew lol my brain was going to explode like trying to squeeze a triangle into a circle hole.
