Inform 7

Inform 7 is a programming language which uses natural language for programming and is used to create interactive fiction games in the Zcode or Glulx format. It is not just a language or a compiler but also a full featured IDE for the same purpose.

This is a very simple Inform 7 Hello World Program

Code:

The World is a room. Every turn, say "Hello World!"

It is much much better than other languages like TADS 3 or Quest for this purpose.

You may say that the language is not powerful enough. But, it is atleast *very* powerful for what it is designed to do.

Play this game for a while: Glass
Now, look at the source.

If not a very useful thing, it is surely a work of art. A great beauty.

P. S: Here is a source of an even more complex game.

Re: Inform 7

Hm, I want to learn this one. It would be interesting to create my own text-based game. But, first, I need a plotline.

The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't.

That is the same reason that is keeping me from creating mine.

The IDE itself comes with a good manual which has a lot of examples and tutorials

Re: Inform 7

I have an idea of what it could be based on, but I haven't done any work on it. I don't have enough time.

Re: Inform 7

Judging by your last thread the bobbym biography seems indicated.

In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
I have the result, but I do not yet know how to get it.
All physicists, and a good many quite respectable mathematicians are contemptuous about proof.

Re: Inform 7

Hmm, text adventures are traditionally RPGs (though programming a different genre might be possible). The Player is going to be bobbym?

Re: Inform 7

What player? The HERO of course better suits me. I slay reppies, marry the Diaz and solve every math problem before they are even posed.

Re: Inform 7

Well, I have this hanging FRP idea about a priest of a Sun God who becomes possessed by something so there is an imbalance in the length of day and night. If you get a Gothic horror setup to go along with it, you should get an interesting basic underlying plot line.

Re: Inform 7

Hi stefy;

Did you play Gothic 4?
What is FRP?

Hi bobbym;
then what do you want the player character to be? A game is a medium in itself, it is not wise to think that writing a game is same as writing a book or a film.

That is why I never wrote one of those games.

Re: Inform 7

Yes, but I have never been interested in writing games in general. I only wrote one real game and it was an alien shooter up type.

I did not.

FRP - Fantasy Role Play.

If there isn't, there isn't. If there is, nothing to be done about it, so why bother?
