Re: Expectation

Hi;

A die is rolled until the same number comes up twice in a row. What is the expected number of rolls?

Re: Expectation

It's like I read your mind. I had already done that one on my own. The answer should be 12. And for three same numbers in a row, I get 43.

Re: Expectation

Hi;

I do not recommend trying to read my mind. A girl I knew tried that and it was instantly fatal. A couple of biophysicists believe that total protonic reversal caused massive neuronic damage to the lobar condulum.

Your answer is not correct.

Re: Expectation

Hi;

That is not right either. Actually, the problem is related to a CCP but we have not covered that yet.

Yes I am sure. How are you getting 7?

Re: Expectation

Markov chain!

((0,1,0),(0,5/6,1/6),(0,0,1))

What are you getting?

Hi;

Sorry, I am doing the wrong problem! 7 is correct. Very good answer!

Re: Expectation

Something I am just trying to learn and the guys bad latexing fouled up everything. I do not know why that should affect your problem but it did, sorry.

Please label your Markov chain and put it into the correct form as we discussed.

Post # 28 and #36 has a starting explanation that will help. Also label the what went where.

Re: Expectation

Hi;

Yes, please do. Labeling is very important for me to see if you have arranged the matrix correctly.

Generally the most important part of solving any problem is labeling, naming and neat work!

Re: Expectation

Of course it is not.

You would be surprised how the notebook I do math in looks.

I hope it is nice and neat. Now what about the labeled matrix I asked for?

It is the exact opposite of nice and neat.

Okay, thank you but I am unable to get that into correct form!  What was your calculation to get 7?

Re: Expectation

Well, when you strip away the absorbing state, you get ((0,1),(0,5/6)). Then you do the (I-P)[sup]-1[/sup] thing.

And do we have another way to solve the problem?

Re: Expectation

Yes we do. A formula.

E=1/6 * 2+5/6 * (E+1)
