0.999... = 1? Or not?My personal view- Last edited by Smartiebell (2012-09-17 07:48:14) #2 2012-09-17 06:47:42
Re: 0.999... = 1? Or not?Hi; In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #3 2012-09-17 06:54:46

You have two decimal points in there. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: 0.999... = 1? Or not?Very few who come in here with that problem can ever come around to any new ideas. Last edited by bobbym (2013-02-17 00:42:35) In mathematics, you don't understand things. Interesting paper, John. Though I'll admit I'm skeptical. by induction -- which does make sense to me. Where I start to have my doubts is where you show that is absurd. Didn't you only prove for the natural numbers? #24 2013-01-31 00:30:53

Re: 0.999... = 1? Or not?Also a good point is that we should "ban" 0.999..., and similar numbers (that end with 9 recurring), because we would then have one representation in decimal notation for every number.
