There are many definitions of that word. Rascal is a common synonym and the intended usage. When said jokingly it is considered funny over here. Since it is an American word that definition is the important one. It is often used in cartoons to describe someone who has blighted you in a non serious way.

If it is offensive to you then I will retract it and replace it with "great mathematician."
