Re: Help Me With Gcse Maths

hi mandy jane,

Sorry I missed you on Friday.  sad  I was out for most of the afternoon and evening setting up and doing the lighting and music for a dance show at my old school (where I used to teach).  There are two more performances on Saturday ( afternoon and evening) and the music is on my laptop so I won't be able to log in to the forum then.

But I haven't forgotten you.  Hope the course works out for you.  I'm happy to offer on-line help with your studies.  I think you will make the best progress if you can manage to log in every day.  Make sure the question you want help with is clearly stated so we don't waste time asking for more details.

Oh yes, nearly forgot to say.  I'm in the same time zone as you.  You can set up the correct time display in your personal profile.

Hope to hear from you again soon,  smile

Bob

Re: Help Me With Gcse Maths

Hi Mandy,

I've had a look at OOL and I've saved the link in my 'favorites'.

And I've looked at the study skills pages.  Or rather, I've listened.  That sounds like a good idea.  Lots on offer here, which should help you.

So, have you made a time plan, working back from the exam dates?

When I'm trying to help someone with maths I often make a diagram.  I think about maths in diagrams quite a bit so it certainly helps me.  What do you think about diagrams?

While you are waiting for the coursework, why not write down a few topics that you find difficult and post back to me here.  I'll see if I can get you started on the road to understanding them.

Re: Help Me With Gcse Maths

hi Mandy,

The Sun is shining;  it's a bit cold but it will warm up as the day progresses.

Fractions?  Ok.  I like to do diagrams for fractions.

I think you need to be able to :

A) say when two fractions are the same

B) find a fraction of something  eg.  what is the VAT on a purchase costing £40 ?

C) change between fractions, decimals and percentages.

D) add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions

I'll start with A) say when two fractions are the same.

Look at my diagram below.

One quarter is yellow and this is the same as shading 3 parts out of 12.

One third is yellow and this is the same as 4 parts out of 12.

Always make a picture like this, so you understand how much a fraction is.

Have you got some paper with centimetre squares on it?

(It'll be worth getting some as you can use it for lots of maths, not just fractions)

Draw 6 rectangles the same size.  Make them 4 cm by 3 cm.

Shade to show the following fractions.

Now look at how much is shaded in each answer.

Write down which fractions are the same.  eg    1/2 = 3/6

Post back to me as many as you can find.

Good luck!

Bob

Re: Help Me With Gcse Maths

hi Mandy,

Get a calendar.

Put a big "EXAM TODAY" in the days when you have exams.

Count up how many days from now until then.

Now you know how close the exams are.  (eeekkk!)

Try to set aside some time every day for studying.

Decide how much time you can spend each day.

Write in how much you actually do at the end of each day.

If it is less than you should have done, make up for it the next day by doing more.  There are bound to be days when you just cannot spend the right amount of time, but try to keep up the average.

Make a list of all the topics you must get good at.

Share out the list amongst the days you have left, so you can see that, if you keep to the plan, you will complete the list in time.

Plan also to try past exam papers.  One per week would be good.  If I know what paper you have done and you post your answers here, I can do two things for you:

(i)  tell you roughly what grade you would get if that was the real thing,

(ii) give some help with the bits you got wrong / couldn't do.

If you keep that up, you will gradually see your grade improving, I'm sure.

Re: Help Me With Gcse Maths

hi Mandy

(1) 1/2 = 3/6

This is correct.

(2) 6/12 = 1/2

Also correct.

So you could make a longer chain of equal fractions:

1/2 = 3/6 = 6/12

(3) 2/6 = 1

Not correct.  '1' would mean the whole rectangle.  2/6 means just 2 squares out of 6 squares.

(4) 3/6 = 1/2

Correct.  But this is just number (1) again, written the other way round.

(5) 3/4 = 1

Not correct.  3 squares out of 4 cannot be the same as 1 whole shape.

(6) 9/12 = 3/4

Correct.

So 4 right out of 6.  Good start!

Then you changed number 5 to

(5) is 3/4 = 9/12

Correct!

So now you have only one mistake.

But there is not a fraction that is the same as 2/6 in the ones I gave you.  Sorry, I wasn't trying to trick you.  I wanted you to think about what is equal and only put those.

There's a diagram for 2/6 below.

Then would you like some more questions?

Sometimes others want to help too.

Re: Help Me With Gcse Maths

OK.  More questions coming up.

Draw rectangles that are 6 cm by 4 cm this time.

Here are some fractions.

Show each fraction on a new diagram.

Write down which fractions are equal.  Try to find as many as you can.

I have put some that are not equal to any others.

Now try to find some more fractions, not in my lists, that are equal to those in the lists.

eg.  6/12 is not in my lists but 6/12 = 1/2

You can also click here

http://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions-menu.html

and try the fractions questions made by MathsIsFun and his team.
