Hi mandy jane;

In order to be helped you have to be specific as to what you need. If you just say I need help then very little can be done.

Yes, I can or some one else can. It is warm here but raining heavily.

Please post your problems word for word. Copy them if need be.

I waited for you but I guess you were busy. I am going to take a little break now!

hi mandy jane,

Let's try this way.

Here are some algebra questions from an old foundation exam paper.

If you think you can do a question, post back your answer.

Or say if you are stuck with that question.

Q1 Simplify

Q2 Simplify

Q3 Factorise

Q4 Solve

Q5 Expand

Q6 Factorise

Hi bob, Mandy here the Answer to the question are?

Q 1 Simplify y+y = y2

Q 2 Simplify p2+ p2+ p2 =p6

Q 3 Factorise x2 - 3x = 1x

Q 4 Solve 3x = 18 3x + 15 =18

Q 5 Expand t (t - 2) Don't know how to do this?

Q 6 Factorise 3y - 12 = Don't know how to do this?

How do you put an x like yours? How do you put a little number at the top like yours as well? Send me a message then NOW OR AS

SOON AS YOU CAN PLEASE Mandy

Hi mandy jane;

Merry Christmas!

For Q5; Expand t ( t - 2). Here you just have to do the multiplication. Do it one at a time.

So:

For Q6

What factors do both terms 3y and 12 have in common? Forget about the sign for a second.

3 is 3 * 1 and 12 is 2 * 2 * 3

So you see 3y and 12 both have 3 as a common factor. So you can pull it out.

And you are done.

-10! are you serious. I never saw anything lower than -2 when I was back in the east. It is 47F here!

I do not understand Q1 Simplify y+y = y2

What is that 2 at the end? Is that a square?

Yes I do!

Mandy some of your answers to Bob's question need a little work. Would you like some help with Q1 - Q4?

That is called latex. I do not want to complicate things right now with that. I also understand this is a test Bob Bundy is giving you so I will not give you the answers. Just some notation help.

Q 1 Simplify y+y

Your answer is this y+y = y2

Math is like any other language, it has rules. I know about your problem so you must try very hard to see this in the right order.

The large font will help.

Generally the number goes in front of the variable

hi mandy jane,

Let's have a look at your answers.

Q 1 Simplify y+y = y2

Q 2 Simplify p2+ p2+ p2 =p6

Let's learn some Latex. This is the computer language that allow you do write this as

Then I put p^2 for each 'p squared'

math] p^2 + p^2 + p^2 [/math]

Although it will take a while to learn Latex, it'll be worth it as your answers will look like **'proper maths'.**

Now, is your answer correct?

Q 3 Factorise x2 - 3x = 1x

Q 5 Expand t (t - 2) Don't know how to do this?

Q 6 Factorise 3y - 12 = Don't know how to do this?

These are all similar and I think we need to go back to the beginning with what you are being asked to do for these. I'll cover that at the end.

Q 4 Solve 3x = 18 3x + 15 =18

Now let's look at factorising more slowly.

Work out 3 x 4 + 3 x 7

= 12 + 21 = 33

But you can also add together 4 + 7 and then times the answer by 3

3 x (4 + 7) = 3 x 11 = 33.

You get the same answer.

So **3** x 4 + **3** x 7 = **3** x (4 + 7) = **3** x 11

This is what factorising is based on. **3 is the factor.**

Let's stick with numbers only for the moment and try some more.

Copy and complete these by replacing the ? marks.

Q7 **3** x 6 + **3** x 8 = **3 **x ( 6 + ? ) = **3** x ? = ??

Q8 7 x 2 + 7 x 5 = 7 x ( ? + 5 ) = 7 x ? = ??

Q9 5 x ? + 5 x 9 = 5 x ( 3 + 9 ) = ? x 12 = ??

Q10 9 x 7 - 9 x 5 = 9 x (?????) = ??

Q11 42 + 56 = 7 x ? + 7 x ? = 7 x ? = ? (42 and 56 are both in the what? times table)

Q12 542 x 98 + 542 x 2 = 542 x (???) = ???

Once you have a clear idea what is happening with just numbers, the algebra will be easier.

I've tried several ways of printing the text. Please say which is easiest for you.

I'm going to make a post that will **start algebra at the beginning.** We are so close to Christmas; so I'll try to do it for early next week.

Bob

Hi Bob;

I wish I knew for sure.

I really do not know how to enlarge ordinary text, ganesh seems to know more about that then anyone. But he is unavailable till Christmas. I do it in latex like this:

Latex is a pain. Sometimes it takes me longer to post than to solve the problem. But it sure looks good when you are done.

I guess you will the get best feedback from her when she gets in. See you later and Merry Christmas.

Hi Bobbym, what you've done is absolutely fine for enlarging LaTeX. The forum, as you may well have notice uses BB code and there are ways to enlarge the font size in BB code, however, I don't believe that this forum supports them - it's not very common to, since its rarely needed. Whilst I agree that LaTeX can make doing simple things quite a chore, it is very powerful and pretty and, if you typeset entire documents using it (as I often do) you do get used to it, lol . Wikibooks has a complete and very instructive manual which you may find helpful, mandy jane, in learning LaTeX, which would certainly make your algebra a lot clearer .

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX

It also links to a pdf, which, in my opinion is much better than the online version.
