Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresWell, I do not see 30 squares. These √ 3 squares are beyond my visual acuity. I am writing a little program to do this for me. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #52 2012-02-19 08:08:47
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresok.but i still want to know what the conclusion is. The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #53 2012-02-19 08:40:24
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresWhere r is the number of rows and c is the number of columns. r ≤ c In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squareshi bobbym The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #55 2012-02-19 08:48:27
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresI will tell you why you should never do that lightly. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #56 2012-02-19 08:51:22
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squareswhy?and do what? The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #57 2012-02-19 08:52:28
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresSimplifcation, which is drummed into school kids is sometimes an error! In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresEven there it might be more useful to think of it in the supposed long form. You could use Stirling's formula on those binomials and go a little further than before perhaps. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #60 2012-02-19 08:58:06

Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresThe first one is what is considered mandatory, simplify everything! But it hides the structure of the problem. It is hard to see what combinatorics is involved. The second shows a pattern and might even suggest a starting point for more dimensions or different shapes. There is a really funny example from an Adrian Oldknow book that demonstrates that stereotyped thinking in math can lead to disaster. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresI know but you must be careful there too remember? In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #64 2012-02-19 09:16:29
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squareshow is that possible? The limit operator is just an excuse for doing something you know you can't. “It's the subject that nobody knows anything about that we can all talk about!” ― Richard Feynman “A secret's worth depends on the people from whom it must be kept.” ― Carlos Ruiz Zafón #65 2012-02-19 09:17:49
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresWe did not get into it because you were not ready. The computation you speak of is a very tricky beast. Often in Numerical analysis you anti-simplify because it is superior. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #66 2012-02-19 09:21:55

Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresI know, that is what they say. I just mention it so you will be prepared when that comes up. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #68 2012-02-19 09:27:10
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresok, thanks! Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresA guy who wrote a nice book on using microcomputers and doing mathematics. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresIt was just a nice book to read. It showed me that there were alternate ways to do math problems. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them. Probability is the most important concept in modern science, especially as nobody has the slightest notion what it means. 90% of mathematicians do not understand 90% of currently published mathematics. #74 2012-02-20 01:47:16
Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squareswhat alternative ways? Re: @MIF , Activity:Drawing squaresToo much to detail, maxima and minima for one. In mathematics, you don't understand things. You just get used to them.
