SOPA / PIPA Protest

As you know, there is mounting opposition to the proposed SOPA and PIPA laws that are being pushed through the US House of Reps and Senate.

They would also affect this forum, as we would have to be sure that no one even LINKS to copyright infringing material ... how could we possibly know? We don't have the resources to comply with that.

Read more on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia: … Learn_more

I have contemplated "going black" as well, but it would need agreement from members here, and would simply inconvenience people trying to learn mathematics and would not spread the word any better than a simple message like this.

hi MIF

read that yesterday.first i was scared to find out that my no.1 knowledge resource is going black.then i read more carefully and i support them.who are they to shut down my friend Wiki?

as for MIFF "going black" i will agree if and only if it's for one day like Wikipedia.

Hi;

MIF;

You do not have to worry about that I already do that. The real purpose of those two acts is:

1) Enforce Micro$oft's DRM. Along with Sony (remember the rootkit)  and the MPAA they are bothered by the supposed loss of revenue to the music and movie industry through piracy.

2) Decrease the rights of all individuals based on Homeland Security and FEMA whose powers were greatly extended by both the present administration and the last one.

3) To eventually give them power over the entire internet just as Rupert Murdock gleefully envisioned several years ago.

Go black if you want you have my support.

Re: SOPA / PIPA Protest

I was thinking the internet is a wonderful place to discuss ideas that are learned from other sources and if everything becomes so copyrighted that we can no longer have discussions, we are up the creek.

Re: SOPA / PIPA Protest

Exactly.

And the trouble with the proposed laws is that they just have to *say* someone is infringing and they get taken down. No proof or trial.

This makes it easy for big companies to clean out all opposition.

Imagine a small T-Shirt company that has been selling on the net for years. A big clothing chain can just claim a design is really theirs, and suddenly the small company is off line.

Re: SOPA / PIPA Protest

Hi;

I am afraid they will get there way one way or another. If all the have to do is get passed our legislature then they are as good as passed. Over here they pass laws in the middle of the night, while we are asleep, or without the majority of people even knowing it was done.

Unfortunately so. And they usually have good reasons for taking away our freedoms.

Re: SOPA / PIPA Protest

Hi,

I agree with the views of MathsIsFun; bobbym and John E Franklin.

Is there a permanent solution?

Re: SOPA / PIPA Protest

Well, one good thing came out of it. I was directed to my congresswoman's page and sent her an email. It fully lists my 1554 points ( in alphabetic order of course ) as to why these bills are putrid. Rest assured people, those bills are deader than people who can remember how to complete a cube or I wasn't the eastern states debating champion 7 years straight.

Re: SOPA / PIPA Protest

Hi anonimnystefy;

I was going to write a little function to do it for me but when I looked at the method I did not like it at all so I never wrote it. So in a word, nope!

Hi;

Yes, but not in this thread. If you want you can start a new thread and we can continue there. Also, it will require some cleaning up.

Is it possible you could post a text only link that explains this?

I am unable to make sense from the wiki and utube stuff.

Thanks
