Re: Zoomable Number Line

Well that's very noble of you.  Such sacrifice!

You see,  one of my challenges to learners is to see how quickly they can find a number.

If there's a button for it then it rather spoils the race.

Re: Zoomable Number Line

That is cruel!

I want to help learners with possible challenges.

Although it might be interesting to ask a more able student "What happens if we try to find an irrational number?"

Re: Zoomable Number Line

hi Stefy and bobbym,

Sadly, it is a matter of record that I have tortured snails in the past.  I was made to do it and blame my university teachers.  No snails died as a result and they went on to recover fully and enjoy happy, slimeful lives.

I have put all that behind me now and lead a snail-torturing-free life.

You will also have read, earlier in this thread, the extraordinary lengths I have gone to, in order to ensure that no frogs suffered as a result of my pond move.  Had I not taken action, they would have been buried alive!

I offer this in mitigation; to show that I am fully reformed and not now a danger to invertibrates and amphibians.

I understand. I have only seen a single snail and I was a child. I think I was afraid of it so I know I did not hurt it.

Re: Zoomable Number Line

When a criminal has been found guilty and is about to be sentenced he may offer some related facts in 'mitigation' in the hope of getting a lower punishment.

eg.  Yes, I stole the money but my children were starving and I needed to buy them some food.

eg.  Yes, I broke the speed limit, but I was rushing my wife to hospital as our new baby was 'on the way'.

eg.  Yes, I dropped wooden hammers onto snails, but I was trying to scare them back into their shells as there was a snail-eating bird coming to eat them.

mitigation:  " lessening the force or intensity of something unpleasant" Dictionary.com

Re: Zoomable Number Line

In Serbia, at the beginning of 2005, we had over 400 registered farms for snail production. Keywords: edible, snail, meat, composition, consumption

I happen to know that in Serbia, like in Italy, snails are eaten daily.

If MIF sees what has happened to his thread he might hit something other than a snail on the head with a hammer.

Re: Zoomable Number Line

I have only seen a single snail and I was a child.

What!  Only one snail in a lifetime.  This I find hard to believe.  Of course we know that bobbym's age is indeterminate, but we can safely conclude that he is not now a child for he says "was a child", past tense.

So either he is lying about the number he has seen or there is a strange lack of snails in the vacinity of bobbym.  Could this be because (i) they are mortally afraid for their safety when he is near or (ii) he has disposed of them because he is "afraid of" them.

Either way, I think, Stefy, you are being too hasty in 'letting him off'.

Just read the bit about MIF being miffed.

What do you want?  A new thread on 'the treatment of snails' ?

Re: Zoomable Number Line

It is true I have only seen one snail in my life. Urban people do not see much wildlife. A girl I knew was convinced that an elephant was no larger than a small folding table.

I am sure anonimnystefy will soon start a thread about the mistreatment of all armor plated life forms.

Re: Zoomable Number Line

I thought there was lots of wild life in Vegas.  Most of what I saw was pretty wild.  What about the lions in MGM?

Got to log off for a while as there's a lot of washing up to do.

Back later.

Re: Zoomable Number Line

hi MIF,

CHALLENGE!

How many moves does it take to find a number?

Not against the clock but by counting the number of moves you make.

Going from 0 to 1 counts as one move.

Zooming out to show 10s (or in to show 0.1) counts as one move.

Then going from 0 to 10 only counts as one move.

How many moves to reach

          •3.4

          •22.45

          •100.00357

Re: Zoomable Number Line

Hey, I just found this thread and applet.  It is really fun!!  When I'm in full screen in IE8, and I use my left or right shift key and click it ignores my shift key though and gets more dense.  But in small mode it works fine and then I can go fullscreen whenever I get where I want to go.  It is an awesome idea, since you can press PrtSc key and then paste it into mspaint.exe I imagine in XP.

Update of Zoomable Number Line

Put bobbym's ideas on the webpage, and added a "count of keystrokes" below "0" button (version 0.84)

The text is still a little "copy-paste" and needs to be smoothed out.
