you can approach the limit from infinitely many sides,but just because two of them match upo doesn't mean that it exists.if you substitute y=x than you get:
my answer of 1/4 isn't equal to your answer of 1 so the limit doesn't exist.

because (x,y) is apraching (0,0) we can come to that point along any line that goes through that point.and because y=x satisfies that condition we can use that line to calculate the limit.

I forgot that. I was coming down the xy axes that has a limit of 0 but if you come down any other path to (0,0) then the limit will be something else. Simplest is y = x.
