Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Hi All,

I think this is a great forum to exchange personal experiences with math. I enjoyed reading the posts here, so I decided to share some things I have discovered lately which I think would be very useful for anyone here. Specifically I'd like to recommend you a website where you can find very helpful and free math learning tools such as "Base System Conversion", "Goodness of Fit Tester" and "Test of Independence".

With all this said, I will write down all the tools and their links you will find at the website.

- Base System Conversion:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=234

- Basics of Exponential Functions:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=265

- Basics of Logarithmic Functions:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=266

- Cartesian Coordinates:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=267

- Derivatives:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=268

- Polar Coordinates:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=274

- Goodness of Fit Tester:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=197

- Simple Linear Regression:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=204

- Standart Normal Distribution
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=104

- Test of Independence:
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=206

- Basics of Trigonometric Functions
http://spreadsheetzone.com/templateview.aspx?i=276

I want to emphasize that you will work with these tools in Excel. You can preview the templates before downloading and see how they work.
I think they are really very helpful in showing the basic concepts and processes about specific math topics. So I think everyone interested in math and science should take a look at them.

If you have any problems with them, you can send me a message.

Cheers,

Suzzy

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

I am starting to learn Excel and I am pretty good at maths as well. I checked out a few of these templates and found them very useful. I am looking for some market data excel templates. I searched withing the templates but did not find an apt one can you provide me some to choose from.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Hi,

What you need to use is a software specifically to do mathematics. Use a CAS to learn math.
Try software like maxima.
I'm not sure whether that allows scripting. I found one that does it, try:  http://eumat.sourceforge.net/

Thanks for the help I will use CAS to learn what is required for options excel and also  check out maxima. I hope it works out for me.

Hi andrewharry;

Or see if you can google around and find an old copy of Mupad lite 2.53. It is free and almost as strong as Mathematica or Maple.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Hi bobbym,

I searched for Mupad lite a few days back, it's not available for download in its official site.
I wouldn't really trust an execuatable found anywhere else!

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Hi gAr;

The old Mupad site or even the scilab sites are not live anymore. Matlab, I think bought Mupad which is a shame.

I wouldn't really trust an execuatable found anywhere else!

That is an interesting point. Just let me say that the worst attacks I have ever seen on someone else's machine were programs that came from respectable sites. One is a famous antivirus program that claims to have 100 million users. There really is no guarantee that any program is safe. There are lots of things you can do to have your own personal peace of mind about a new program.

That is why I did not direct him to a specific link that I know of. If something were to go wrong then it would be my fault for recommending the link. Like I said there are no guarantees even from the best sites or even the homepage of the app.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Well, yes. Any executable found around isn't safe. But I'd trust a software if many people are using it.
Anyway, was there anything extra in mupad which is not found in other free CAS?

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Hi gAr;

Mupad is high quality, with the best graphics of any of the CAS. It had more commands than say Maxima. Several books have been written about it. It is essentially a clone of Maple. I would place it as stronger than Maxima. Maxima uses lisp as its basic language, Mupad uses a procedural language. So if you are coming off of a language like C++ or some BASIC it is easier to migrate to Mupad.

Like all CAS it is very difficult to get started with. It has 4 - 5 thousand commands. The help is huge. Anyone could clearly spend their entire life on one version without ever knowing anything more than a small part.

Hi bobbym,

Oh, I see. I didn't know that.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Hi gAr;

A CAS is a like a gun. Some are better than others but in a duel more often than not the better man and not the better weapon wins. Any CAS is good and in the right hands it does not matter much whether you use Maple, Mupad, Sage, Mathematica, Maxima or Derive. The best man wins with any package.

Also the converse is true, in the hands of a bungler no package will help.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Hi bobbym,

You said it!
And I mainly use Sage because I like the python scripting, which I find it to be an easy and clear syntax. But yes, ultimately it depends on the user.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Python is pretty popular for the scripting. They also are producing their own CAS. They call it sympy.

Yes, I'm aware of that. And sympy, numpy, scipy are all included in sage too.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

We should be very grateful for the fact that we live in a time when there are such things to help us do math.

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

Indeed, so much is available in those packages. I wonder if I'll ever know what are included, and they keep on adding more functions.
Algorithms and hardwares just keep improving, really great

Re: Improving Math Study Skills in Excel

I keep looking at a different subject in the help mostly everyday. There is no way for anyone to know a whole CAS.
