Hello people

I am Ivar.

       my strong feeling : " I have not understood mathematics" in school days.

I want to understand mathematics & its real usage in science.
I would like to start learn from beginning.

Hoping for great fun in understanding maths.

Hi Bobby,

Its not that I didn't learn maths in school. But it was learnt without passion and I forgot most of them.

Now I want to learn maths knowingly and want to understand really how does it make a difference in real life.

Mostly I am interested in learning
  1. To understand what maths have to be applied & where
  2. How are the real world problems solved with mathematics ( like someone is saying with physics+ maths one can find distance between sun & earth, this is just an exmaple)
  3. What is actually a research in mathemantics ( I know heard about research in physics,chemistry,computer science but don't what is research in maths)

  These things might look like applicable for very advanced math learners but these the things I mostly feel wonderful things.

I want to start from Algebra,Geometry,Matrices to any advanced level. Its a long term wish. Donno how far  I will be able to take it to.

If you have any other sources for learning maths I will be very happy to learn.

Heard that alot. I thought is was only a problem over here but...

what is research in maths

I guess the problems outlined by Sir Michael Atiyah, Andy Wiles ( circa 2000 ) and the rest of them at the Clay Institute represent the forefront of mathematical research.
All in all pretty boring stuff posed by a bunch of topologists who wish to keep math largely to themselves.
There is not a single problem there that only a handful of people can understand let alone try to solve.
Topping the list is the Riemanns Hypothesis and Swinnerton Dyer. See Doron Zeilbergers comments about it.

Maybe 20 or so years ago two teenagers using Mathematica discovered a simple yet unknown theorem in Geometry. One that was missed by Euclid, Archimedes, Newton, Euler, Gauss and yes all the boys at the Clay Institue. I thought to myself why are we spending time pushing the frontiers in Algebraic and Geometric Topology when there is still so much for us to discover in Calculus, Geometry and Algebra. These are fields where even students can still make discoveries.

I recommend recreational math. The biggest names in math in the past worked on recreational type problems. Made important discoveries and new branches of math were created.
Amateurs as well as professionals can understand and solve the problems and possibly even become famous.
