Re: Any Guesses?????

I clarify...
On each of the six sides of the two dices, any six numbers
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9
are marked. It could be any of these ten numbers.
The condition is that it should be possible to display all the dates from 01 to 31.
Further, dates with single digits should be displayed as 01, 02, 03 etc.
What markings would make this possible, thats the question.
There's only one solution to this problem.

Re: Any Guesses?????

Aha ... thanks

12 possible sides .. and thy should combine to make 01 thru to 31.

If one were marked 0,1,2,3,4,5 and the other marked 6,7,8,9,0,1 then we could hav silly combinations like 38, so that won't work.

Re: Any Guesses?????

Nevermind getting a silly combination like 38,
but how would you display, say 22, 23, 24 or 25???

Re: Any Guesses?????

I'm guessing this is a puzzle, rather than a 'help me', so I'll leave it alone.

That's very close, actually. You just need to change one number on one of the dice.

Re: Any Guesses?????

I suspect this puzzle should be solved in the same way as the scales one was.

Re: Any Guesses?????

I've always been confused on this. Is it one di, two dice; or one dice, two di?

Re: Any Guesses?????

Mathsy is right! This is a puzzle and crept into 'Help me' by mistake.
Anyway, I shall give the solution.
One dice is marked 0,1,2,3,4,5.
The other is marked 0,1,2,7,8,9.
Don't ask me how you get 6!

Re: Any Guesses?????

One die, two dice.
The second die could also be marked 0,1,2,6,7,8.

Re: Any Guesses?????

I thought, ganesh, you said there was only one solution to the problem.....was that right?

Re: Any Guesses?????

Those two are really the same thing, it's just that one of the numbers is written upside-down!

Re: Any Guesses?????

Reminds me of the guy who hires out boats. He yells out "Time is up No 6, please come back ... (pause) ... No 6, time is up!! ... (pause) ... ummm...are you in trouble No 9?"

I probably don't understand what ad-finum means, but I noticed in the original subject covered before angel and candy,  that the sequence of powers is parenthesized from right to left, that is why most people are confused.  If you do the power and make it the base of the next operation, then it should go to infinity, but I see from your examples that you make the answer the power of the next iteration.  Very interesting.  Bye.

Re: Any Guesses?????

I came looking for this topic to find the thing that ganesh said about the nth root of n that I knew that he'd said but I'd forgotten what it was that he'd said, so that I could quote him on it here.

While I was reading through the topic, I noticed the thing about splitting a number into parts to get a maximum product and I had a really nit-picky idea.

Using MathsIsFun's 15 as an example, you could technically have (-10)*(-10)*35 = 3500, or anything involving 2 negatives like that, to get a much bigger product. It's completely cheating though.
