I do not understand this joke...I agree with Identity. There was never any conclusive argument or suggesting statement to tell us that you were driving the bus.

Re: Another riddle slash thing

The first part of the question is usually told as "I am driving a bus..."
The listener then concentrates very hard on keeping track of all the people who get on and off the bus, and so forget the very first fact that they're given.

The joke is better spoken than written, because this way you can just reread and it becomes obvious.

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

Re: Another riddle slash thing

Oh, OK then. If that were actually in the first post of this thread, it would have made a whole lot more sense.

But now I understand. smile

Re: Another riddle slash thing

It's kind of obvious I'm driving the bus. How do I know how many people are going on and off? Because I'm driving the BUS!!!! Get it now?!

Re: Another riddle slash thing

Why couldn’t you be the conductor instead? A conductor would have been better at keeping track of who got on and off – the driver had to concentrate on driving as well. However, if it was a bus with no conductor, you should have stated this in the riddle.

I’m sorry, but I find this riddle totally lame. I’d give it 0 out of 10. down

It's your opinion JaneFairfax. I'm not so keen on it either.

Re: Another riddle slash thing

The most common version of this one that I've heard is a bit more subtle in the presentation/question involved in the trick.
"You're driving a bus. [long stuff about people on and off, then once they're good and confused about all the numbers...] What colour are the bus driver's eyes?"

This works better because instead of asking directly for them to repeat back the first instructions you gave them (who's driving?) it makes them actually stop and process the question to find the information themselves. And since their head is so full of numbers at that point, when confronted with a simple logic question they tend to be completely lost.

Yes, I realize that putting this much explanation behind a joke takes away a bit from the laugh factor... but hopefully it should at least make the joke easier and better for you to retell to your friends. ;-)
