About the Exercises

Welcome to the Exercises section of the forum smile

Please contribute some exercises to help people who are still learning what you already know

We also want this part of the forum to be just about exercises, so don't be offended if off-topic talk gets deleted.

A few guidelines to make the exercises user-friendly:

* Under each topic, please number the exercises sequentially
* Use a bold heading with the word "Exercises" in it so that people can identify exercises as they scroll down.

Re: About the Exercises

Thanks, Devanté, that is a great start.

I have edited them a little.

Re: About the Exercises

No problem. I just got a little confused when you said 'number the excercises'. smile

I'm making some more as we speak. smile

Re: About the Exercises

Three cheers for Devanté!

You have contributed LOTS of wonderful exercises. I thank you on behalf of all students who will benefit. smile

Re: About the Exercises

And three cheers for MathsIsFun, who made this forum under the title of 'Exercises'! smile

I will try to make as much as I can - But sooner or later, I'll start running out of ideas for subjects...

Re: About the Exercises

I think it would be a good idea to post a link in each topic(the top of the first post in each topic) to a page on mathsisfun.com that relates to what is being exercised(if there is one). Fx in Basic Percentages, you'd have the following link: Learn about Percentages!

Re: About the Exercises

As this board increases in both the amount of exercise topics and branches of mathematics covered, perhaps subboards should be created in order to help sort out the exercises. For example, opening the "Exercises" board leads the user to another directory, with different boards for different subjects, such as "Arithmetic", "Algebra", "Geometry", "Calculus", etc. I suggest this because as the exercise board grows and some topics start getting kicked a page or two back, people are going to be less likely to notice them and they'll be "wasted". Also, it'll help users find what they need easier.

Re: About the Exercises

Patrick: Good idea!

(I also intend to put a link on the explanation pages "go here for exercises")

Zhylliolom: Also a good idea, but can't be done with the current forum software (PunBB). But Rickard Andersson is working on v1.3 which may allow it. So it may be possible about the time it is needed smile

Re: About the Exercises

Yeah, I agree. A sub-forum would be good. Especially as there are too many topics...

Re: About the Exercises

But so far Devanté has been doing nearly all the contributions ...

Surely some of you can think up a few ... remember it is to help people who are coming up behind you.

Re: About the Exercises

I'd like to write some calculus-type exercises, but I feel like if I did that now, it wouldn't really fit yet, it's a big jump from the current level of material. Maybe I should try some lighter stuff first?

What if exercises were removed from "Teaching Maths and given their own section so that there could be Algebra, Trig, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, etc forums?

Re: About the Exercises

Zhylliolom, feel free to post away.  Hopefully in the future the gap will be filled, but that isn't something you should worry about now.

Re: About the Exercises

Just posted an excercise on probability.

I might post some topics on histogram excercises and sampling excercises when I get the time.

Re: About the Exercises

Just needed to ask this - Should we keep the difficulty of the excercises at a certain level?

Re: About the Exercises

So long as they fit within the title of the topic. If it is a *little* harder than the topic states, you could always have something like:

56. (Harder) x²-5=10

And you can also start a new topic if needed.

I guess it is all to do with how the user experiences it smile

Re: About the Exercises

I think people may be shy to post their answers - we haven't really said they can. Should we say "answer them!" ... ?

(Also it is holidays in most of the world, visitors will double in a couple of weeks.)

Re: About the Exercises

Hmm...we'll have to get the message across so everyone knows that these are for everyone's use, and people can post here...otherwise all my work (and everyone else's) is for nothing. :\

I'll put something in my signature. Question is, though - Are members shy to make their own excercises or to answer to the them? Or perhaps both? :\

At least we've got some good questions if anybody asks for any. smile

Re: About the Exercises

I have moved this near the top of the forum list, because it now has a good lot of exercises.

Re: About the Exercises

Good thinking.

Maybe we can post enough excercises until we get up to 5 pages, and possibly, more. There are many possibilities, and ideas are always popping into my head (and probably everyone else's).

We've already reached 2 pages, we can't stop now...

Re: About the Exercises

Well, you have helped people with all the exercises you have posted so far ... keep up the good work.

And hopefully some other members would like to contribute? Imagine if you had to learn again what you already know ...

Re: About the Exercises

I wonder if members are actually using the exercises? I doubt one post in one of the topics can attract over a hundred views in a week or so - Unless we have some weird Google Spiders or MSN Bots.

But anyway, I'm glad we have nikconsult, Kurre and espeon helping out over here...

Re: About the Exercises

im using them sometimes, but i dont post all answers, i just  use them to practise. but many of these exercises are things that i have never seen before tongue. an introduction on each exercises or a link to how to do it would be really great, then i can maybe learn something new. Anyway keep up the good work =p
