Hi, MIF members,

I've just noticed that this forum lacks HTTPS, and I'd feel far more secure if we had proper certificates ensuring critical safety and data protection, and it would help to prevent intruders/hackers from accessing private data.

Meanwhile, the MIF website itself has a HTTPS certificate, so why can't this forum have one as well? Is it because of cost?

Hello amicable MIF members,
I've tried to comprehend these vector questions but they've been making no sense whatsoever. Take a look.

1. A horse is pulling in a large rock with a force magnitude of 600 lb in the direction of 47 degrees. I can pull the rock with a force magnitude of 225 lb, but I need to move in the direction of 51 degrees. In what direction should I pull the rock.
My (solution?):
Note that all degrees are referring to BEARINGS(My teacher told me this.).. so the components are..
HORSE: 600cos(43 d), 600 sin(43 d) (because 90 - 47 = 43 deg)
HUMAN:225cos(x), 225sin(x)
So.. let's use atan(or inv tan)

tan^-1((600sin(43 d) + 225sin(x))/(600cos(43 d) + 225cos(x))) =  53 deg
(because tan is o/a.. vert/horizontal)
WolframAlpha provides me with an answer of 115 degrees.. which doesn't really make sense.. because if the human pulled that way, then wouldn't the 47 deg decrease?

2. Suppose v = <-2, 5> is decomposed into vectors u and w, such that u and w are orthogonal to each other, and u is parallel to vector <3, -1>, and u + w = v. find u and w.
I think this involves projection, but how do you make it parallel to <3, -1>?

So what if n is not Prime?  It must have a decomposition into factors all of which are smaller and so contained somewhere in the factors of the factorial.  But what if such a factor occurs twice?  It can be further factored using numbers we haven't yet used so n will divide the factorial.

This sounds a bit clumsy so I'll illustrate with an example.

Suppose n = 147 = 3 x 7squared

Any idea for 5? thickhead says (sigma of stuff)/(some number choose 3), presumably that is the number of all three-number combinations, though my mind is totally lost on the numerator.  Could you explain the numerator? I have to admit, I was spitballing when I saw made these problems and I didn't really have a clue on how to solve these. Bob? As in Bob Bundy?

Volume of the prism should be fairly straight forward.  Calculate the area of the triangle QRV and multiply by the length, PQ.

The pyramid is more tricky.  You'll need the area of the base, TVRS.  This is a rectangle.  You need Pythag. to calculate VR.  Then the perpendicular height from TVRS to U.  If you draw the triangle UZY, you'll see that UZ is not perpendicular to ZY so that length won't do.  But you can calculate UY and the angle UYZ and so treating UY as a hypotenuse you can get the required height by opposite (height) = hyp x sin(UYZ).  Once you have this the volume of the pyramid is  one third of the area of base times the perpendicular height.

Then just add together the two volumes.  :)

I'm not acquaintanced with Vodafone and how it all works in the UK,  but when I had these irritating issues, I logged into my router(type it's ip in your search bar), chose the Internet/DNS page, and set DNS to manual. Then enter the Google DNSs, i.e 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. That seemed to work for me but you should contact Vodafone to see what's up..

EDIT 1: These are the IPv6 addresses..  2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844.

Or maybe it was intended to test if you are aware that sometimes a calculation cannot be completed.  If I was going to do this I would word my questions (have to be several) "Work out all the missing side lengths and angles in these triangles.  If you think a triangle cannot exist explain why."  Something like that would be reasonable if it was included like that as part of the assessment.  If it was a single question on the topic, and you have copied it correctly**, then it looks like a serious error.  What was the test?

This peculiar question was on an unit test on Trigonometry, and the problem, as I recall, was not worded as ".. if you think a triangle cannot exist explain why." There were merely blanks corresponding to the missing sides and angles, with the instruction saying "solve the triangle."

Hello amiable users of this forum,

lately I have been facing a conundrum that was present on my math test.

The question asked me to solve a triangle ABC given that

<B = 38 deg

b = 15 miles

c = 27 miles

.. and to list all sides and angles, with explicit blanks for these sides and angles.

I then set up the corresponding Law Of Sines equation:

This then provides us with..


But sin(c)'s range is from -1 to 1. Am I making a mistake? Could it be a typo?
