• Nobody is perfect.
• I am a nobody.
• Therefore I am perfect.
• That which is perfect is good.
• Therefore I am good.
• Nothing is good except God – Luke 18:19
• Therefore I am God!

#54 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Eerie facts » 2019-05-14 13:44:43

The RMS Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in the Atlantic Ocean on 14 April 1912.

Everybody knows that – and it’s not an eerie fact.

What is eerie is that in 1898, a writer named Morgan Robertson wrote a novella entitled The Wreck of the Titan: Or, Futility – which eerily foretold the events of fourteen years later! eek

The story features the fictional ocean liner Titan, which sinks in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg. Titan and its sinking have been noted to be very similar to the real-life passenger ship RMS Titanic, which sank fourteen years later. Following the sinking of the Titanic, the novel was reissued with some changes, particularly in the ship’s gross tonnage.

I’ve just learnt the sad news that the singer and actress Doris Day has died, aged 97. sad

Here’s my favourite song of hers, “Qué Será, Será”.

The tune of this song is similar to the opening of the second movement of Carl Nielsen’s Second Symphony.

Funny – I wonder why it didn’t give the second one as cos⁻¹(x).

If you integrate correctly, you should get:

If you think the results are strange, remember the identity:

Also when you integrate, do not forget to include an arbitrary constant.

SBT Fact #9

Gravity is not a force (whatever Newton might think)!! According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, gravity is merely the result of the warping of spacetime by mass; it is the warping that causes massive bodies to move towards each other.

#61 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Matrix multiplication and inner products » 2019-05-13 11:22:31

Dot product is matrix multiplication. The dot product of the vectors

is the multiplication of the 1×n matrix

by the n×1 matrix

Multiplication of matrices with more rows and columns is a way of doing multiple dot products simultaneously.

#64 Re: Dark Discussions at Cafe Infinity » Quantum Physics » 2019-05-13 10:36:09

Poem about quantum mechanics (and general relativity):

Can light be photons – particles with size?
And can electrons sometimes act like waves?
The quantum world may be one big surprise –
But that’s how subatomic stuff behaves.
While Pauli, Bohr and Heisenberg might wonder
If Schrödinger’s cat is alive or dead,
The physics of large objects, though, comes under
General relativity instead.
And as the likes of Stephen Hawking bring
More hidden Nature’s laws out of the dark,
Is there a law that governs everything –
From massive black holes to the tiniest quark?
How might GR be merged with QED?
The search goes on for such a GUT.

It wasn’t your signature; the spam links were in the quote in your post. (The spammer posted the links in post #32; you quoted the whole post, including the spam links, in post #33.) This was what you did.

The spammer John86045 posted something like this (#32):

Hey, check out the following.

You quoted it in your post (#33), which looked like this:

Initially a moderator removed the spam link in post #32, but left the link in the quote in post #33. That was why I made post #34. But everything has been taken care of by Ganesh; it’s all fine now.

Tip for future posting: If you wish to point out a spam post by quoting it, avoid including the spam links in your quote!

The most general equation of the straight line passing through the points (a₁,b₁) and  (a₂,b₂) (where either a₁ ≠ a₂ or b₁ ≠ b₂ (or both)) is:

If a₁ = a₂, you get the vertical line x = a₁. If a₁ ≠ a₂, you get a line of the form y = mx +c.
