Find Number of Trophies

The ratio of Jenny’s trophies to Meredith’s trophies is 7:4. The difference between the numbers is 12. What are the numbers?

Let me see.

Let 7x = Jenny's trophies

Let 4x = Meredith's trophies

Their difference is 12.

7x - 4x = 12

3x = 12

x = 12/3

x = 4

7x - 4x = 12

7(4) - 4(4) = 12

28 - 16 = 12

12 = 12

Jenny's trophies = 28.

Meredith's trophies = 16.
