Is y a Function of x?

Determine if each equation defines y as a function of x.

1. x + y^2 = 1

I say no but don't know why.
If no, can you explain why?

2. y = (3x - 1)/(x + 2)

I say yes.

3. x^2 - 4y^2 = 1

I say no but don't know why.
If no, can you explain why?

Re: Is y a Function of x?

1. solve for y=

how many y's do you get for each x?

2. agree

3, same reason as for 1.

I totally understand there are two values for y for the 1st and 3rd questions. So, no function there.
