A mere greeting will not help

Since this site is all about making mathematics fun and simple members should bring important discussions such "Prove that 7^0 = 1. A mere greeting will not help.

I hope members are not hurt:(:(:( anyway!

Re: A mere greeting will not help

Ya..we all know that maths is important...but more than that fun is important....and we do both together equally...and we are not hurt...Thanks for remembering us that maths...is also there to do...

Hi;

Welcome to the forum.

What do you mean by mere greeting?

Re: A mere greeting will not help

Hi Agnishom;

What do you think of this idea?

First we appoint an august body of members in mathematics. They are given the exalted title of Grandmembers! Then new members are required to write a 3000 word essay on some topic in mathematics that interests them. It is then submitted to the Grandmembers for their approval. Approval would be by secret ballot.

To set up this machinery, I propose a new thread with a poll just for the Grandmembers. There they could make the decision to accept, reject or behead the new applicant.

I suspect you were thinking the same as me, but, in case, I'll say it anyway.

This requirement should be carefully judged, not only by content, but also by counting the words.  After all, the applicant is trying to demonstrate he/she is a mathematician.  So 2999 or 3001 just will not do.

Re: A mere greeting will not help

The essay must also be grammatically correct and written like the member's mother tongue is English. It must also contain two idioms, one of which is very rare in use. Also, it must contain at least 10 rare words, at least 5 archaic words and 3 words from Olde English.

Members will be required to know and love LaTeX and at least two  programming languages (one procedural and one functional) and must be able to work around comfortably in at least one CAS.

Members which can make metaphors and analogies will be prefered.

Would that be;

"Members who can make metaphors and analogies will be preferred"  ?   smile

But don't ask me to write it in Serbian. eek

Does who include robots? smile

Thanks for the correction. Double letters always make my head spin. It seems my attempts at not becoming illiterate are just immensely unsuccessful.

You write English like a native;  in fact, the occasional mistake is essential if you wish to appear to be a regular, teenage, English guy.

What is equally stunning is your triple negative in the above sentence.  I had to convert it into propositional logic just to get the sense of what you were saying.  smile

Re: A mere greeting will not help

I was going to need a triple negative if I was to have as many words with double letters.

The double-letter word that amazes me the most is bookkeeper.

Re: A mere greeting will not help

Ok, then; here's a double letter challenge:

Construct a sentence using only words that each contain at least one double letter.

Wow, that is a hard one.

Bookkeepers commonly see eerie letters.

Oh, eerie.  I thought you said eeire.  Must get my eyes tested.

Happy Harry will keep getting letters appearing excessively, unless all sinners utter puzzling piffle.

Sorry, I did write eeire. I meant eerie. Did you use use a spelling "cheque err"?

Wow, that is a good one.
