Re: The Nhoj Files

Yes, it is.

Boy let me tell you what:
I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.

Re: The Nhoj Files

Ok, #9:

The Nhoj Case Files #9: The Case of the Frequent Notes

The Boss once again called and this time, gave me a list of numbers. "These came in this morning, the first at 7 am, each coming in intervals of 8 minutes, and they're addressed to you. What do you think are they?" he asked

I looked at the numbers, which were:

98, 0

2

262, 440, 698,1319

"Hmm, was there a return address?" I asked.

"Yes, but it might not help much. The address is in Vienna" He said

"Hmm, looks like I'm going somewhere," I said.

"To Vienna?" he asked.

"No, just down the street" I answered.

"But there's nothing there but a burger joint,  a coffee shop, and a music school!" he told me.

"I know" I said, taking my coat, leaving the Boss confused. After all, this is a personal note.

Now, where will the detective go? And a bonus Question: Who might he be meeting?

Recap:

#1: Mathsys got it 200%
#2: Zach got it just on time
#3: Zach got it simply, but no one tried to answer where the Faith diamond is
#4: Jane proved it right
#5: Zach was correct, whether or not the paper was 4.5 m. squared
#6: Mathsys answered right
#7: Zach answered correctly
#8: Zach answered wrong!
#9: Open, plus the bonus question

So, still open are:

#3's extra question,
#8, and
#9 and its extra question.

Scoreboard:

Mathsys:2
Jane:1 (though I don't think she cares anymore of the nhoj files)
Zach:5
Me: 4 (those still unanswered)

Re: The Nhoj Files

Ok, since no one seems to get no. 8, I'll just post my answer:

Of course, you can have a go with no. 8 if you like, just don't cheat by looking at my answer.

Re: The Nhoj Files

The Nhoj Case Files #10: The Rabbi at Bay

"What now, Chief?" I asked picking up my cellphone. I hope this time it's something exciting. Not riddles and notes (though that one was pretty fun).

Apparently, I'm right.

"We have a body at Beetle Bay" He said. "It matches the profile of Howard Getsroff, a rabbi that recently passed away, whose body was taken from the grave. Howard and the John Doe are both 5'ish, Caucasian, about 40 years old." he added.

"You sure it's Mr. Getsroff?" I asked. Our office isn't well known for it's hi-tech instruments in determining identities of Does.

"Well, the body had a birthmark near an autopsy scar, we can ask his relatives if he has that, and case closed. Looks like you won't need to be earning your pay today", he sighed.

"Not necessarily, I just proved that that body isn't Howard Getsroff" I said.

How?

The Nhoj Case Files #11: the Case of the Planted Testimony

"I do", said the man, a person testifying on the case against my friend (the Philippine historian, now being accused of stealing the Spolarium), swearing to the whole "do you swear" blah blah blah. To be honest, I think court cases are boring, but hey, I'm being paid to sit here.

When asked to retell his account, the cartographer replied: "Well, 2 weeks ago, he went to the Philippines, saying that he will try to explore its wonders and try to 'steal' some of the beauty. then, I thought he was talking about food.

"Then 3 days later, I was woken up at 2 A.M. by him calling long distance", he continued, " He told me that two hours ago, under the cover of the night: 'I did it, I stole the Spolarium!'. I then reported him to the police.", he finished off.

"Can you crack this one? Prove your friend's innocence?" asked chief.

"Of course, chief. In fact, I already have."

How did he do it?

Re: The Nhoj Files

The Nhoj Case Files #12: The Case of PBN's E-Mail

"Paul B. Norman has sent us this e-mail, written in code", said Chief in the cellphone, interrupting my ski trip. He was referring to  our spy in Shadow Headquarters who has been spying on the Shadow's for a while, after we discovered who the Shadow Cop Spy was. "The problem is, as you know, you are our best cryptographer, and you're on vacation."

"All right, chief, forward the e-mail to me. But you have to promise that no more calls from you until my trip is finished," I said.

After a few minutes, I got it. It read:

1 1: 525151151525522514000525514000232525151010

2 1: 33333203102330
2 2: 21121202301210
2 3: 31131202201310
2 4: 21123202201210
2 5: 21123203202211

"Hmm, have you been expecting some sort of retaliation from the Shadows for some time?" I asked chief after reading the message.

"Yes, we found that they might release a virus in our databank. Why?" he asked.

"Because its gonna happen soon. Thank God I'm on vacation," I said, cutting the call. I just hope that chief will keep his promise.

Now, assuming this was done today, Jan. 6, 2008, in how many days will the attack take place?

After 3 days (hopefully), I will post a clue if no one gets this one.

Re: The Nhoj Files

The Nhoj Case Files # 13: The Case of The Valentine Heist

Finally, the Day of Hearts has arrived! I remember 15 years ago when a man, who we knew to be a poorly paid accountant, was accused of robbing a bank on Valentine's Day. Of course, he denied, even if his fingerprints were all over the shop.

"I didn't (EDIT)rob any bank(/EDIT)! I'm innocent! I was at work, you see!", he insisted.

"Really? Well, tell your boss that you'll be taking a leave of absence for, I dunno, 5,6 years," I told him, slapping the cuffs on his hands. People do lose their ability to lie when under stress!

What made him sure that the accountant was lying?

Oh yeah, for no particular reason, I'll give a tidbit about our first person character:

He is a guy named Rein Nhoj who particularly has no permanent job. He just sticks around the "HQ", which the chief, who is actually his uncle, manages.

The chief knows of his ability to solve logic problems quickly, and uses this to help HQ. Since Rein has no job, his entire salary is from his paycheck from Chief.

The Nhoj Case Files # 14: The Case of the Confusing Diamond

I am, once again, finding myself with two persons who don't have anything in common and are ,right now, arguing.

"That is not the real diamond! You thief! Where is it?", the lady shouted, pointing to the small stone on the hand of the man.

"This is the real diamond!", the man objected. "In fact, I have proof!", he added. taking a hammer out of his briefcase. Why he had a hammer in the first place, I didn't want to find out.

Placing the stone on a table, he carefully aimed the hammer at the ?diamond and with one big arc, hit the stone with so much force that the table quivered. The stone remained intact.

"See? It didn't break? Therefore, it is a diamond, which is the hardest mineral on Earth!", he cried triumphantly.

"You have a point," said the woman reluctantly, with a voice sounding of defeat.

"No he doesn't," I said.

Why doesn't he?

Re: The Nhoj Files

The Nhoj Case Files # 15: The Case of the Golden Opportunity

"Okay, so maybe that wasn't really the diamond," said the man.

"Hey! Where did you hide my diamond!" the lady was fuming. it looks like she's about to explode!

"Just a second!" the man protested,"Before that, may I interest you with this?" He then snatched out of his briefcase what seemed to be a bracelet, an ugly one at that. it was covered with mold, and was rusting in some parts.

"Where did you get that?" the lady asked, her eyes opening wide. "Is that my-"

"Yep, the one and only! It is your heirloom, the pure gold bracelet!" the man answered.

"But my bracelet was lost in the lake!" the lady protested.

"But this is your bracelet! Look, it has your family logo on it!" the man said, wiping off some mold to reveal the logo. "I would love to return this to you...For a price that is"

The woman had a look of resignation"Oh well, how much do you~"

"Not so fast," I butted in, finally having enough of the conversation. "This man is a con! That's it, you're coming with me!"

You have to figure out why this man is a con, 's all.

"But what about my diamond?" was all the lady said.
