That's ok...sometimes I surprise myself!! eek

Here's a link to a helpful MIF page with examples: Algebra/Word Questions.

Many years ago (19 August 2009, to be precise) I posted a word puzzle along the lines of those on that MIF page, but somewhat tougher: Edna's age. There's some discussion there about solving methods, including a couple of different algebraic options.

I will check out the link provided.

Before calculators some answers could only be obtained by doing the 'sums' long hand or by estimating or by using a tool such as a slide rule or logs.  What I mean is there will be problems which won't simplify to a simple answer.

Thank you, Bob. In that case, thank God for calculators.

Find k such that the equation kx^2 + x + k = 0.

Let me see.

The discriminant is b^2 - 4ac

Let b = 1

Let a = k

Let c = k

(1)^2 - 4k + k = 0

Solving for k, I get 1/3.

Is this correct?

The screen size of a TV is determined by the length of the diagonal of the rectangular screen. Traditional TVs come in a 4 : 3 format, meaning the ratio of the length to the width of the rectangular screen is 4 yo 3.

A. What is the area of a 37-inch traditional TV screen?

B. What is the area of a 37-inch LCD TV whose screen is in a 16 : 9 format. Which screen is bigger?

HINT: If x is the length of a 4 : 4 format screen, then (3/4)x is the width.

Let me see.

Traditional TV

Use a^2 + b^2 = c^2

x^2 + (3x4/)^2 = (37)^2

LCD TV

Use a^2 + b^2 = c^2

x^2 + (9x/16) = (37)^2

Is any of this correct?

A lanscaper, who just completed a rectangular flower garden measuring 6 feet by 10 feet, orders 1 cubic yard of premixed cement, all of which is to be used to create a border of uniform width around the garden. If the border is to have a depth 3 inches, how wide will the border be?

NOTE: 1 CUBIC YARD = 27 CUBIC FEET

6 feet by 10 feet = 60 feet^2

Length = 2x + 10

Width = 2x + 6

Is this right so far?

I found the volume of a cylinder formula online to be V = pi•r^2• h, where r = radius and h = height.

V = pi(5)^2(10)

V = pi(25)(10)

V = 250pi (feet)^3

Let me see.

So, $2 for the first 5 minutes.

25 minutes - 5 minutes = 20 minutes

Let 30 cents = 0.30.

Then 20 minutes x 0.30 = $6

I say $2 + $6 = $8 for the total cost of the phone call.

$8 for each bathroom = 8B

$4 for each room = 4R

There are 4 letters. Each letter can only be used once.

4! = 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24

Answer = 24 ways

profit is income less outgo

sologuitar wrote:

Subtract what? It cannot be 18,000 - 15,750, right?

why not?
the 18000 is revenue or income
the 15750 is cost or outgo
profit is what is left after subtracting cost/outgo from revenue/income
so 18000 - 15750 is the right subtraction

In that case the profit is $2250.
