We see the same side of the Moon because Moon's period of Revolution around the Earth is same as its period of Rotation on its Axis.. viz 27 days!!

It wanted to be normal.

with a nine-, eleven- and fourteen-minute hourglass, can you time the boiling of an egg for 7 mins?

Yes! We don't even need the Fourteen-minute hourglass!
Start the nine- and eleven-minute hourglasses simultaneously. Invert the nine-minute hourglass as soon as its sand has displaced completely and then invert it again as soon as the sand in the eleven-minute hourglass has displaced and start boiling the egg! When the sand in the nine-minute hourglass gets exhausted, you'll have boiled the egg for seven minutes!!
