Colour blind respondents

Can you please help with this question?

A survey is conducted of 1,721 Respondents.  It is then said that one is six of the respondents is colour blind.  What is the raw figure for the actual number of colour blind respondents?

Thank you.

Vee

Re: Colour blind respondents

Required number is 1/6 times 1721 ...
i.e. 1721x1/6 = 286.686
so, an approx 287 Respondents are colorblind!:D

Re: Colour blind respondents

i do believe 287 is the required answer, but as an extended thought, would it perhaps not be more accurate infact to say that 286 are colourblind, and there is a 5 in 6 chance that there is instead 287?

Re: Colour blind respondents

Probability shouldn't come into it. The survey has already been taken, so its results have definitely happened and anything else definitely hasn't.

You're right that a fractional answer is silly though.

If we assume that the surveyer wanted to get a nice simple statistic out of their results, of the form "1 in x people are colourblind", then we can work out the range of numbers that would cause the result to have a 6 in it, instead of a 5 or 7.

If we do that, then there were somewhere between 265 and 312 colourblind people surveyed.

But that's probably thinking about it far too much. smile

Re: Colour blind respondents

To find a percentage of something, multiply by the percentage and divide by 100.

So 4% of 1721 is (4x1721)/100 = 68.84 (or about 69 if we're still talking about people).

Re: Colour blind respondents

Thank you moderator.

This is all helpful.

I am trying to understand a report which I find difficult.  Take these two statement, which to me do not entirely make sense.

Out of 1,721 respondents

(1)  "One in six victims experiencing homophobic hate incidents experienced physical assault."  (You say 287 respondents)

(2)   "Four percent of all lesbiand and gay people have been physically assaulted because of their sexual orientation of the last thee years,"  ( You say 69)

Both statements concern assaults on gays with a time frame stipulated in the second.  If we assumed the time scale in the first was similar (x 3) then that would be about 95 respondents. There is a disparity here surely?  Is it significant?  If we consider the first case as one year the disparity is even greater.

I would very much appreciate you opinion.

Thank you once more

Re: Colour blind respondents

The two statements are talking about different things.

Statement 2 says that 4% of all the people surveyed have been assaulted.
However, statement 1 says that out of the hate incidents experienced by the people surveyed, 1 in 6 of those was an assault.

So the way I interpret this, of the 1,721 people surveyed:
- Around 414 of them have experienced a hate incident of some sort.
- Around 69 of them have been assaulted.

That way there's no contradiction.

Thanks, but could you explain how you now come up with a figure of 414 victims.

Thank you

Re: Colour blind respondents

It's only an estimate. I said that because 69 x 6 = 414, so it would make statement (1) work.
The number of assaults had to be about 69 because of the 4% statistic.

Can I please trouble with another?

Statement 1.   One in eight different, gay and bisexual people, equivalent to over 450,000 people in Britain, have experienced a homophobic hate incident in the last year.

What is the raw data of the actual number of 1 in 8 out of 1,721 repondents?

Does this correspond in equivalence terms (the 450,000) to 3.6 million people?

Statement 2.  One in five have experienced one in the last three years?  What is the actual number?

I am ever so grateful.

Thanks

Vee

Re: Colour blind respondents

Yes 3.6+ million because 32 is 8 x 4 and 4 more is 36.
