#54. It was calculated that 75 men could complete a piece of work in 20 days. When work was scheduled to commence, it was found necessary to send 25 men to another project. How much longer will it take to complete the work?

#55. A dishonest shopkeeper professes to sell pulses at the cost price, but he uses a false weight of 950gm. for a kg. His gain is …%.

#56. A contractor agreeing to finish a work in 150 days, employed 75 men each working 8 hours daily. After 90 days, only 2/7 of the work was completed. Increasing the number of men by________ each working now for 10 hours daily, the work can be completed in time.

Re: Brain Teasers

Yes, it’s correct.

The solution to #59 it not unique. Just because you have your own answer doesn’t there are no other correct ones. If you want to us to give your own answer, you need to give more clues to narrow down the possibilities (e.g. is the formula polynomial, exponential, or whatever).

Re: Brain Teasers

JaneFairfax,
I performed a quick mental calculation for all the terms applying Lagrange's Interpolation formula and I got one of the terms in the series wrong, by oversight.
I apologize my post was hurriedly done.

The question relates to recreational mathematics. After someone posts the solution I have in my mind, or I do, you'd notice that this solution too perfectly fits in the series.

Just to prove that there are infinitely many answers for #59,

where K is any real number (or even complex number) you like!

#61. A lottery ticket series has the first two slots alphabetical in character and the next three slots numerical in character. The alphabetcial slots can take any value from A to Z and the numerical slots can take any value from 0 to 9. How many minimum tickets must I buy in order to make my success rate greater than 2.5%?

Re: Brain Teasers

#62. A rich merchant had collected many gold coins. He did not want anybody to know about them. One day, his wife asked, "How many gold coins do we have?"

After pausing a moment, he replied, "Well! If I divide the coins into two unequal numbers, then 50 times the difference between the two numbers equals the difference between the squares of the two numbers."

The wife looked puzzled. Can you help the merchant's wife by finding out how many gold coins they have?
