Re: Equation of a Straight LineI remember, I was asked this question at the time of my entry into University in an interview. The Head of the Department, Physics asked me this question. And this is exactly the formula I gave. He was impressed and suggested me to graduate in Mathematics instead of Physics. A pity, I chose Physics instead. Character is who you are when no one is looking. #28 2006-11-18 18:51:53
Re: Equation of a Straight Line
...is that actually a straight line equation or is it a whole bunch of mathematical mumbo-jumbo? #29 2006-11-19 00:04:03
Re: Equation of a Straight LineThat is actually a straight line equation or it is a whole bunch of mathematical mumbo-jumbo. Why did the vector cross the road? It wanted to be normal. #31 2008-03-02 20:51:40
Re: Equation of a Straight LineIn Finland we use the equation y= kx+b, where k = the gradient, and b = the y-intercept, if anyone's interested to know. Last edited by FFFFFF- (2008-03-02 20:52:09) #32 2008-03-02 21:12:52
Re: Equation of a Straight LineThanks "FFF...", I will add that. "The physicists defer only to mathematicians, and the mathematicians defer only to God ..." - Leon M. Lederman #33 2008-09-15 20:21:26
Re: Equation of a Straight Linein sweden we type: y = kx + m Last edited by sitting (2008-09-15 20:22:11) #34 2008-09-15 22:32:23
Re: Equation of a Straight LineAre you sure, sitting? "m" is normally the gradient ... ! "The physicists defer only to mathematicians, and the mathematicians defer only to God ..." - Leon M. Lederman #35 2008-10-11 04:18:00
Re: Equation of a Straight Linehere in singapore we use y = mx +c too, but most of us use y-y1= m(x-x1) #36 2008-10-11 17:19:06
Re: Equation of a Straight Linelukeqwerty, Character is who you are when no one is looking. #38 2009-03-04 00:56:43
Re: Equation of a Straight LineIndia too uses y = mx + c. Character is who you are when no one is looking. #39 2009-03-04 13:15:09

Re: Equation of a Straight LineI'd just like to point out that in post #5, where Ricky divides by product of a and b, his transform does not work if either a or b is zero. Therefore, his super-complex formula does not work for either y = ax (because b=0) or y = b (cos a=0). #41 2009-04-06 07:24:20
Re: Equation of a Straight LineOops - I spotted Jane's contribution only when my post caused page 2 of the discussion to be displayed; until then I hadn't got as far as page 2. Can I console myself that I had a similar idea to Jane? #42 2009-10-21 20:24:53
Re: Equation of a Straight Line
Actually yes they can! Why did the chicken cross the Mobius Band? To get to the other ...um...!!! |
