What should be the question?

There is a prisoner in one room with two guards. One guard stands in a front of the door which will lead prisoner to freedom if he choses that door. That guard tells truth and nothing but the truth. The other one stands in a front of the door which will lead prisoner to 5 years in prison. That one tells only lies. Prisoner can ask one question to one of the guards so the guard could answer Yes or NO. With this question he should find out through which door he should pass(logically that should be the door of freedom).

*Note: He doesn't know the connection between guards and doors(that the guard who tells truth is in a front of the door of freedom and that the other one is in a front of 5 y. in preason), but he does know that one of them tells truth and one doesn't.

Most of us here know it, but I think we should leave it for someone else.

Re: What should be the question?

He asks any guard, "If I were to ask the other guard, which door I would have to go through to go to freedom, which one would he say?" Then, you take the opposite.

The truth telling guard will tell you that the other will say the door to doom (Say, the left), while the lying one would tell you that the truth telling guard will tell you that he would tell him it's the left door, as he's lying about what the TTG is going to say.

Simple!

Re: What should be the question?

Hi zoe, don't mind Zach, I mean he is the Grim Reaper after all!

Welcome, anyway.

I hope you hang around a bit - but you have to get used to he fact that replies may take a day or so, depending on when anyone can get onto a computer!

Ummm ... you can post your email address only if you are over 13 - are you?

Re: What should be the question?

Zoe, you'll get a boy that you fancy on me? Am I supposed to be scared? 1) You don't know where I live. 2) I'm not afraid of 12 year olds. x.x

Well you are on the right way, but guards can only answer Yes or No, so the prisoner will have to ask different question.

The prisoner should ask"what wpuld the other guard say if I ask him which door would lead me to freedom" and go through the other door that he points.
Explanation:If the prisoner asks the question to the liar he would not point to the door that the other prisoner would point, which is the right door. Therefore, he should go through the other door which would lead to his freedom.
If the prisoner asks the question to the guard who tells truth then also he can go through the other door[the door which is not pointed by the guard].
