devante, i don't think you realise yet that no matter what you say, no matter how valid your proof may be, no matter if you counteract everysingle argument he gives with reasonable valid answers, he will not change his mind, and his remarks will become no more sensical he will simply throw back the same ignorant senseless arguments again and again

Re: Domestos Kills Germs!

Quote:

(A) 3/3 = 1. Any 2 numbers that are the same when divided equal 1. My proof should be valid. Now tell me what is wrong with this one;

(B) x = 0.999 ...
( C)   10x = 9.999 ...
(D)10x - x = 9.999 ... - 0.999 ...
(E) 9x = 9
(F) 9x/9 = 9/9
(G) x = 1
(H) 0.999 ... = 1

This is a basic proof, show me why it is not valid.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A.R.B

(A) This is True! 3/3 = 1

(B) x = 0.999... So x = Infinite/Recurring 0.9 which Equals 0.999...This is OK!

(C)  10x = Infinite/Recurring 0.9 x 10 which Equals 9.999... This is the First Mistake and Problem!...

It is Impossible to Multiply an Infinite/Recurring Number/Value! the Reason being before you can Multiply a Number/Value you have to first Know how long the Number/Value is! i.e. How many Decimal Places Long it is!...
Remember we are talking about a Number/Value i.e. Infinite/Recurring 0.9 which is a Single Number/Value that Repeats Itself Endlessly!...
The Only Calculation for 10 x  Infinite/Recurring 0.9 is 10 x 0.9 Decimal Places! Which would then be from Infinite/Recurring 0.9 Stage One to Stage Ten = 0.9999999999

(D) To (H) Mean Nothing without first overcoming the above (C) Problem!

A Further note! On the above Even if it was possible to Multiply an Infinite/Recurring Number/Value! There is no Known Number Large enough to Ever make an Infinite/Recurring Number/Value! that is Less than 1 in Value Ever Equal 1

Going back to my Original Proof!...

( 1 / 0.9 ) = 1.111... This is the Infinite/Recurring Value we will now use Once Only on the 0.9 Value! as shown below...

( 1.111... x 0.9 ) = 0.999... And Will always Continue as 0.999...

For the above  the Infinite/Recurring Calculation is Done first! before it ever Calculates the 0.9
This allows the 1.111...to Calculate Infinitely the 0.9  But the most Important thing is that the .9´s will always be Less than 1

I have been gone for a while and apparently you guys are still letting Anthony bait you because he doesn't believe the 0.999... = 1 thing. Some people's minds are just impossible to change about some things; I'm sure it'll be no great loss to humanity if we just allow him to carry on believing. "

A.R.B

You are just as welcome as every other person that has tried to prove my counter proof arguments are wrong?...
So have a go! show Infinte/Recurring 0.9 using one Calculation Only!!...

Erm... actually, I don't feel welcome to do so at all. A proof was given shortly after this quoted post, and you attempted to refute it. What you didn't seem to notice whilst offering this insight is that you presupposed your conclusion (i.e. you used your belief that 0.999... doesn't equal 1 to try and show us that 0.999... doesn't equal 1).

You are not going to drag me into trying to prove you wrong. Here are some things I'd like to point out:

1) You'll probably say that I've given up because I'm admitting that you're right. This is not the case: you are wrong.

2) The reason I'm not going to be dragged into such a discourse is that you simply won't listen to what other people are saying. You argue in ways that are quite simply utterly illogical. You assume an argument isn't true because you don't like it's conclusion. You presuppose your own conclusion, and the falsehood of everyone else's conclusions. You ask everyone for their proofs that 0.999... = 1, but you won't take any of them seriously. Likewise, you clearly do not take your own "proofs" seriously, as shown by the total and complete absence of any sort of mathematical or logical rigour.

Anthony: may I ask how old you are?

(B) (¹/3*3 = ³/3) = (0.333...*3 = 0.999...)
(C) ³/3 = 0.999...
(D) 0.999... = 1

A.R.B

(A) 1/3  = 0.333... (recurring)

The above Calculation Will always Continue as .333...

(B) (1/3 x 3 = 3/3)

The above is the First mistake! (1/3 Will always Continue as .333... ) Now Times 3 must Equal .999...( 3 / 3 Equals 1 so these are not Equal Values!

(0.333...x 3 = 0.999...)

The above is a True Calculation! as I have shown above...

(C) 3/3 = 0.999...

The above is the second mistake! 3/3 = 1

(D) 0.999... = 1

The above is the Third mistake! 0.999... Will always Continue as 0.999...

A.R.B

P.S. In case you didn't know what I was referring to by "presupposing your conclusion", it is highlighted above. You are attempting to show that 0.999... is not equal to 1, thus you cannot use that fact as you have done in the bold section above (esp. underlined).

I don't care if you think that 0.999... is not equal to 1. You're not making decisions that affect my life because of this erroneous belief. But I do hope the penny drops for you at some point.

Anthony.R.Brown, seeing as you are very interested in the question 'why', here is the definition of it;

the cause or intention underlying an action or situation, especially in the phrase `the whys and wherefores'

Re: Domestos Kills Germs!

Perhaps I should have wrote what exactly I meant.  ARB has shown time and time again that he isn't here for a discussion, he isn't here to learn.  As such, I recommend that no one responds to ARB's posts unless it has some form of coherent thought or content behind it.  Perhaps if no one replies, he'll get bored and give it up.  But as long as you all keep feeding replies to him, he will stay.

Again, this is just a personal recommendation.

Hear, hear!

I agree. It may be hard - especially since it's inevitable that this sort of boycott will have him posting that it means that we concede that he was right all along (though whether he actually believes that he's right, as opposed to just saying he's right is something I'm not entirely sure of!). But it might be a bit easier once we realise that he's going to distort whatever we do (posting various proofs or the non-posting of anything) into some sort of admission of wrongness on our part, so it doesn't really matter too much what we do.

And it'll hopefully either get rid of him, or make him start making some sense!

I won't be replying to any of his posts hereafter, then.
