What famous mathematician are you?

Take this short quiz

This is my result: tongue

1114559664_germain.jpg

You are Sophie Germain.  An 18th century French woman with a passion for numbers, you were recognized by the foremost mathematican of your time, Carl Gauss, as a mathematical genius... although you had originally written to him using a masculine pseudonym, "Monsieur Le Blanc".  Much of your work in number theory is still discussed, including the "Germain primes".  Most of your fame, however, comes from achieving mathematical success in a time and place which discouraged women from such accomplishments.

Re: What famous mathematician are you?

You are Alan Turing. Called the "father of computer science," you did much of your work as part of the war effort, breaking German codes in World War II. Your work in mathematics centered around the limits of computers. The "Turing Test" is still the most discussed method for determining whether computers can really "think." A world class marathon runner and a decorated soldier, you were later persecuted for your openly homosexual lifestyle. You are believed to have committed suicide.

Boy let me tell you what:
I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.

Alan Turing! How did they know machine intelligence was an interest of mine?

Re: What famous mathematician are you?

Yeah, I'm Ramanujan too!!!  WHOOHOOO!!

You are Srinivasa Ramanujan. A prodigy in India, you were "discovered" by the English mathematician Hardy, to whom you wrote a letter detailing your mathematical discoveries. With very little formal training, you were able to solve problems which had been frustrating generations of mathematicians. You died young, of tuberculosis acquired while working in England, but your insights and approaches have spawned entire fields of mathematics. Your rags-to-riches story of an unknown young mathematician turning the world on its head was reportedly the inspiration for the film Good Will Hunting.

wow! some of that is actually true, (like the formal training part) lets just hope I live longer.. faint

Re: What famous mathematician are you?

actually this reminds me, i think it would be cool if mathsisfun.com had a 'mathematician of the week' feature, featuring a particular mathematician, or pehaps phycisist or scientist, a bit about their life and of course, what they contributed to mathematics.  You could either list them in chronological order, or perhaps by what is most appropriate for the date. (like einstein for pi day)

Just an idea. smile

Write a cool bio of a mathematician and I can feature it!

Re: What famous mathematician are you?

Recommendation: Start a thread with such a title, and have everyone submit their own.  We can work together and improve upon each others or people request a mathematician they wish to know more about.

"In the real world, this would be a problem.  But in mathematics, we can just define a place where this problem doesn't exist.  So we'll go ahead and do that now..."

Re: What famous mathematician are you?

yeah, who ever writes it should more or less understand the concepts and discoveries that particular mathematician made. In some cases that could be pretty difficult. Maybe I can try doing one a trial run and maybe post it the first day of next week.

Any suggestions for who should be mathematician of next week?

I was thinking about Ahmes. He appears to be the oldest mathematician in record.
