Re: Railfence cipher code

That's the funniest thing, rida. And it was lightning who cracked the code!

The best bit was that it was Devante actually 'found' his own hidden meaning in it!

I can't stop smiling.

Re: Railfence cipher code

LOL!

So, lightning, you DID crack the code, and beat all of us ... are you sure you still want it deleted? Or maybe just laugh it off?

Re: Railfence cipher code

Ah, how very World Peace of you. smile

The problem with this kind of code is that it's always cracked in exactly the same way. That means that once you know the trick, any and all codes of this type become fairly trivial to break.

Maybe you could come up with a slight variant?

I have to disagree with you, rida.

EEYNINTQA
VROESOEUL

I don't think it is really a cipher.

Re: Railfence cipher code

It is a cipher, it's just a different type to the one you're used to.

Usual ciphers do something like change ABCD to BCDE. They just map each letter to a different one (or maybe to symbols or something else). These are substitution ciphers.

The railfence cipher is different, because instead of changing letters, it just rearranges them. This is a type of transposition cipher.

Transposition ciphers are less common than substitution ones, but they're still ciphers nonetheless. More secure ciphers sometimes combine the two together.

In general, a cipher is anything that changes a piece of writing by doing stuff to its letters.
If it did stuff to words instead, then it would be a code.
