Espeon, have you heard of Philip Pullman? He is an excellent author, rumoured to be as popular as Tolkien himself.

He made a trilogy just like Paolini in the early nineties. The trilogy is named 'His Dark Materials', and (obviously) consists of three parts. The first named 'Northern Lights', the second named 'The Subtle Knife', and the third named 'The Amber Spyglass'. Both are worth a lot of money and are worth reading.

Hmmm, I remember once borrowing 'Northern Lights', but for some reason I never got to reading it, and returned it. Probably something I should look into again.

Just fyi I'm reading 'The Algebraist' by Iain M. Banks. And nope, it's not about maths, but I'm finding it incredibly difficult. There are examples in the book of sentences lasting around 10 lines. It's quite interesting however, as I'm very into sci-fi.

Espeon, you're close - she took a lot from a single book (or was it a comic?) and little snips from other sources.

Toast - J.K. Rowling allegedly copied the popular novel (comic?) 'Worst Witch', and took snips from Dan Brown's 'Da Vinci Code'.

I can't exactly remember - but I think the main character's name was Potter. She also may have 'borrowed' some terms and given them new meanings ... muggles was one of them, I think.

I think the Harry Potter books are works of such originality.
  J. K. Rowling brought the idea of witches and wizards into a whole new light; I don't believe she copied the idea from Jill Murphy. Murphy said that witches and wizards made spells and potions for sorcery, Rowling said that witches and wizards live with their magic powers, use them in everyday life, and hide themselves from the real world that we all live in. She also gives good reasons for myths and legends such as the Phoenix and dragons etc, that we have made up, to actually exist (even though they don't).
  And on top of all that, she wound a mysterious story in the novels, unlike the "childish adventures" of Mildred Hubble, which have to relevance nor referance to each other. There was no secret about Mildred's past....no dark bad guy about to turn up any second and kill everyone, no secrets the reader craves released every once in a while - the Harry Potter books have easily outshone the original idea we're talking about, because they are totally different.
