Re: simplify

Although that looks ghastly, it's actually not too hard. You just need to group all the x terms together and all the y terms together, work out what power each of them has and therefore what power of x and y multiplying all of them together would give.

For the x's, you have x^(1/3) * x^(3/4) on top, which is x^(13/12), and on the bottom you have x^-2 * x^(3/2) = x^(-1/2).

Dividing x^(13/12) by x^(-1/2) gives x^(19/12), so that is the x term of the final answer. You should be able to do the same thing for all the y terms now.

Why did the vector cross the road?
It wanted to be normal.

Re: simplify

ok thanks for the help now you are asking me to do teh y terms... is this what i did look right?

y * y^3/4        y^3/4
-------------- = -------- divide = y^-1/8 correct?
y^3 * y^-2       y^-6

Re: simplify

Not quite. The y on the top should be y^(1/2), because it's in a square root sign.

Also, when multiplying 2 numbers, you add their powers, don't multiply them. For example, x[sup]2[/sup] * x[sup]3[/sup] = x[sup]5[/sup], not x[sup]6[/sup].

Similarly, when you divide one number by another, you take the second power away from the first one.

Re: simplify

what do you mean take teh second power away form the first one?

i got
for top one > y^5/4
for bottom one > y^-6
now i have to divide i got -5/24

Re: simplify

No. You need to subtract the power, not divide them.

Well, I didn't see any rules regarding necro-posting here. And whenever I did, neither bobbym and MathIsFun said anything about it.

Re: simplify

hi Monox D. I-Fly,
It was just for fun.I have neither  objection ,nor any authority nor any intention to do so. My contention was it may not benefit the one who asked the question. I too have responded to queries 2 to 3 years back when the topic was found interesting.
